What is “training”? Process of developing knowledge & skills of employees so become better at their jobs. Employees need to be flexible and multiskilled Employees should be trained:- on joining firm (induction) throughout careers (ongoing training) upgrading skills, multi skilling, retraining N.B. Sometimes best way of getting new recruits is to train from within. Depends on situation.

Training makes people better at their jobs Increase production levels Improve quality Reduce waste Reduce staff turnover Prevent accidents Motivate staff

Induction Training For new staff soon after they join Used to:- Familiarise worker with the company – layout, rules, products Familiarise worker with their job Make employee as efficient as possible Encourage new workers to be committed Often shown videos / presentations / meet managers and other staff Think back to induction at school – good/bad/what would you change? (Activity – Design induction day for 1st day M&S sales assistant)

Ongoing training Off-the-job training Away from work (i.e. outside courses). Things that can’t be learnt while working (e.g. the theory of a job) Examples? Some companies have own training schools. specialist trainers no distractions less relevant? expense lost productivity

Ongoing training On-the job training Worker remains at work - learns how to do their job Demonstration / coaching / job rotation / projects Examples? cheaper less disruptive relevant trainer needs training only as good as the trainer

Ongoing training benefits Employer benefits improve quality/motivation of staff introduce new ideas better customer service increase productivity Employee benefits develop skills improve promotion prospects improve job satisfaction increase in confidence

Identifying Training Needs Training strategy identify skills needed draw up action plan implement plan review “Skills Gap” highlighted from appraisals / performance reviews – important part of training process Manager and employee meet and review performance and skills (Annually) Employee can understand where their own gaps are. Employer can design appropriate training courses. Online Activities Bsol/gcse/hr/Rec & Training. – penalty shoot / walk the plank
