Prenatal Development
2
Agenda- February 9 th 1-Unit 1 Quiz 2- Begin Reading Chapter 4 in your textbooks. 3. Lesson: What are Genetic Factors?
3
Find in the Textbook: Genetic Factors and the Unborn Baby Explain the significance of Genetic Factors. What are chromosomes—what is their role? Traits: Distinguish between dominant and recessive traits
4
Genetic Factors The Genetic code is found in DNA molecules which compose the chromosomes. We have 23 pair of chromosomes The sex of the child is determined by the 23 rd pair of chromosomes. The male X or Y chromosome determine the child’s sex.
6
In the textbook: Multiple Pregnancy What is multiple pregnancy?
7
Agenda- February 10 th 1.Multiple Births 2. Textbook Search: The Stages of Prenatal Development & Definitions 3. Assignments: Twins PowerPoint & Prenatal Story
8
Fraternal Twins A fraternal birth is caused when multiple babies develop from two or more ova. Each ova is fertilized with different sperm. Therefore…there is a different genetic makeup. These babies are as much alike and different as any other brothers and sisters.
9
Identical twins Children who develop from one single ovum, fertilized by a single sperm. The ovum splits to produce two or more children. If the ovum does not completely spit, the babies will become conjoined twins.
10
Identical Twins These twins have the same genetic makeup due to the fact that they came from one fertilized ovum. Very similar in appearance. Except for their genes, identical twins are not exactly alike. (Finger prints, foot prints are not exactly the same). Environment can make them different.

3 Stages of Prenatal Development Germinal Stage Embryonic Stage Fetal Stage
12
3 Stages of Prenatal Development Conception marks the beginning of the germinal stage. This stage covers about 2 weeks of the pregnancy. During this stage, the zygote floats freely in the uterus before implantation; cells divide.
13
Stages…continued. The most critical stage of pregnancy is the embryonic stage. The body systems develop. This stage lasts about 6 weeks. By the end of this stage the embryo looks human.
14
When the bone cells start to replace cartilage the baby enters the fetal stage. From this point until birth the baby is called a fetus. During this stage all parts of the body mature and overall size increases.
15
Fetal Stage Two milestones happen during the fetal stage: 1) the baby’s heart beat can be heard in the 3 rd month of pregnancy. 2) between the 4 th and the 5 th months the mother will begin to feel the baby move http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gFy 7sUnJ4w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gFy 7sUnJ4w

Define these terms/ Answer Questions (Fetal Stage) Quickening Age of Viability What happens in the ninth month that is so significant?

Assignment: Groups of Two 1. Prepare a PP of pictures of identical twins and fraternal twins. Try to find pictures of the same people taken over a few years (5 sets of twins). You are expected to present these PPs and provide some observational insights. Present on: Monday, February 16 th 2. *To be done individually: Write a story about prenatal development from the unborn baby’s point of view. Use your creativity to express what life might be like for the baby (2 pages—double-spaced). Due: Monday, February 16th

Agenda- February 11 th 1. Work on Twins PowerPoint (To be Presented on Monday, February 16 th ) 2. Work on Prenatal Story (Due on Monday, February 16 th ) 3. Go over Textbook Hunt Responses
19
Agenda- February 12 th 1. Work on Twins PP 2. Work on Prenatal Story 3. Read: Page 129-132 in the textbook (Prenatal Care) Write down some presumptive and positive signs of pregnancy from page 131.
