MATE 6059 will be taught by a team of five university and district-based instructors including: Shelby Morge, University of North Carolina Wilmington Sid Rachlin, East Carolina University Dawne Coker, Cumberland County Schools Ana Floyd, Randolph County Schools Wendy Rich, Asheboro City Schools

3 Introducing Dr. Shelby Morge Shelby Morge (sounds like morgue with an “e” on the end) Have been in mathematics education for about 15 years Former middle school and high school mathematics teacher in Indiana Received my Ph.D. from Indiana University This is my sixth year as an assistant professor at UNCW I love spending time with my friends and family. I also like to eat, shop, exercise, and travel!

5 Introducing Dawne Coker Originally from Buffalo, NY Former classroom teacher, literacy teacher, & Math/Science facilitator Currently the K-5 Mathematics Specialist for Cumberland County Schools Have been in education for ten years I have a three month old son named Jackson.

7 Introducing Ana Floyd K-5 Math & Science Lead Teacher in Randolph County (for the past 6 years) Taught fourth grade in Randolph County for 8 years Completed the NC EMAoL program this past year Currently in graduate school at UNC-Greensboro Love to travel, shop, and watch TV/movies

8 Traveling in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

9 Introducing Wendy Rich Elementary Curriculum Coordinator in Asheboro City Taught fifth grade and eighth grade in Randolph County (11 years) Lead Mathematics Teacher in ACS/RCS for 10 years Completed the NC EMAoL program this past year Currently in graduate school at UNC-Greensboro No time for hobbies

11 Introducing Sid Rachlin ECU Professor of Mathematics Education For the last 42 years, I’ve taught mathematics at all but four grade levels from Kindergarten through Graduate School. Before coming to NC, I was on the faculty at the University of Hawaii and the University of Calgary I’ve been fortunate to secure funding to support K-12 teachers’ professional development through federal, state and private grants every year since 1978. I am pleased that this year’s funding will help you earn your EMAoL.

12 Meet the Rachlins

13 First class meeting… I apologize that I am not able to meet with you during your first face to face meeting on Saturday. I will be attending and presenting research at the International Symposium on Elementary Mathematics Teaching in Prague. I will plan to catch up with you upon my return…Shelby Ana and Wendy also send their regrets. They are working on another professional development project in Western Carolina on Saturday. During your face-to-face meeting on August 27th, you will be working with Sid and Dawne. Before Saturday, please work through the activities in this module and come prepared to discuss your progress.
