The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) and the MSBC partners are challenging Massachusetts School Districts to increase their school breakfast participation by 35% Districts are competing for recognition and awards from January 2013 to December 2014

Research has shown that students who eat breakfast are ready to learn Schools that implement breakfast programs see improvements in attendance, behavior, and test scores According to the No Kid Hungry campaign, 60% of K-8 teachers across the United States say they regularly have children in their classrooms come to school hungry

In Massachusetts, 57 percent of students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch do not eat school breakfast on a given day - which according to the Food Research and Action Center places the Commonwealth 42nd among states in low-income student school breakfast participation

7 August 14, 2013 Summer Institute-Serving Up Breakfast How will school districts compete in the challenge? School districts that increase student average daily participation (ADP) in their school breakfast program by a minimum of 35% between January 2013 and December 2014 will be recognized for their accomplishments. District breakfast ADP as of October 2012 will serve as the baseline data for the Challenge.

8 August 14, 2013 Summer Institute-Serving Up Breakfast How will school districts compete in the challenge? Districts that meet or exceed the Challenge’s breakfast participation goal and sustain an ADP increase of at least 35% will be acknowledged with Breakfast Challenge awards School districts offering the School Breakfast Program are automatically enrolled in the Challenge. A district may choose to opt out of and private schools can opt in to the Challenge by contacting ESE.

9 August 14, 2013 Summer Institute-Serving Up Breakfast School Breakfast Resources ESE and New England Dairy & Food Council (NEDFC) are offering grants The ESE funded Child Nutrition Outreach Program (CNOP) will provide schools with technical assistance and outreach support

Competitive grant, up to $7,500 per school to support breakfast initiatives

Federal Reimbursement State Reimbursement Revenue from Paying Students SNDs receive several different types of reimbursement that offset the costs of the breakfast program.
