How to use this module Lesson Plan Student Sheet
This module was designed to help you navigate through the curriculum. Notice the three navigation buttons at the top of the page. Move your mouse over each one to learn what it does. The large buttons on the bottom represent resources available to you for the days lesson. Each color represents a different resource: red for lesson plans, yellow for student sheets, and blue for multimedia Some slides contain background information for teachers. To access these instructions, use the dark blue button Lesson Plan Student Sheet Multi Media Back- ground

Objectives LO1: Compare and classify familiar organisms on the basis of observable physical characteristics. LO2: Describe vertebrates in terms of observable body parts and characteristics. LO3: Describe life cycles of familiar organisms LO4: Compare and contrast food , energy, and environmental needs of selected organisms. LO5: Describe functions of selected seed plant parts

Day 1 Classify Lesson Plan Student Sheet
Classification is the process of putting things into groups. There are always many ways of grouping objects based on their appearance. Today students will set out to classify objects and animals according to some observable trait. The most important thing is that the students understand that you can only classify for one characteristic at a time. Do not allow them to make a group of yellow animals and another group of swimming animals because it is possible that an animal could be both yellow and a swimmer. Day 2 Insects and Spiders
They are all bugs but can you tell the difference? Insects have 6 legs, 3 segmented body parts, 2 antennae, an exoskeleton and most have wings (as adults) Spiders have 8 legs, 2 segmented body parts, fangs, an exoskeleton and spinneret's. Lesson Plan Trans- parency Student Sheet Insect PowerPoint Insect Brain Pop Spider Brain Pop

Day 3 Build a Spider and an Insect
Now that your students have had an opportunity to identify and classify spiders and insects today they will get a chance to build one. Review with the students the similarities and differences between spiders and insects and then allow them to cut out the shapes and glue them together to make one of each. While working on the project do not tell them how many legs to put on the spiders and insects. (Though you may choose to ask some leading questions) Lesson Plan Student Sheet Make a Bug Interactive

Day 4 Helpful and Harmful Insects
Insects can be both helpful and harmful. Helpful insects like the bee make honey and pollinate flowers. Helpful ladybugs eat harmful aphids. Harmful mosquitoes suck blood and transmit disease, and Japanese beetles destroy plants. Lesson Plan Student Sheet About Bees
9
Day 5 Classify Animals Lesson Plan Student Sheet
Students in second grade are already familiar with some ways to classify animals (farm animals/house animals/wild animals, big animals/small animals). One important way that animals are classified is based on their back bone. Animals with backbones are called vertebrates. Animals without backbones (including insects and spiders) are called invertebrates. Lesson Plan Student Sheet Vertebrate Brain Pop Advanced
10
Day 6 Vetebrate Groups Lesson Plan Student Sheet
Today you will be presenting them with the five vertebrate groups and the students will classify their paper animal pictures into groups based on the four B’s Backbone, Birth, Blood, Body covering Lesson Plan Student Sheet

Day 7 Human Life Cycles Lesson Plan
Humans are born as babies (not as eggs) As they grow and change babies become children. Children continue to grow and change into adults Over time adults age and change and become elderly People change over time in many ways. But compared to other animals changes humans go through seem small. Lesson Plan
12
Day 8 Metamorphosis (Big Change)
Compared to humans and other animals Amphibians and insects go through a much larger change from young to adult. In class you will compare the young and adult and discuss if they make a big change (complete metamorphosis) or a small change (incomplete metamorphosis). Lesson Plan Student Sheet Life Cycle PowerPoint

Day 9 Life Cycles Lesson Plan Student Sheet Student Sheet Ant Student
All animals have a cycle of growth and development known as a life cycle. As discussed in the last lesson some animals go through major changes and others go through small changes. Today you will be comparing and contrasting the life cycles of different animals. Day 10 Butterfly Life Cycle
A butterfly life cycle is one of natures most dramatic examples of metamorphosis. Today your students will be doing a life cycle craft illustrating the different life stages of a butterfly. Reinforce the words larva and pupa as these words are new to your students. Lesson Plan Alternate Lesson Plan Student Sheet Student Game Life Cycle Butterfly Brain Pop Butterfly Chrysalis Movie

Day 11 Seeds Lesson Plan Student Sheet
Most plants begin their life cycle as a seed. Seeds come in many shapes and sizes. Today in class you will begin investigating seeds. Future lessons will discuss other parts and jobs of the plant. Lesson Plan Student Sheet Seed Plant Brain Pop
16
Day 12 How Seeds Travel Lesson Plan Student Sheet
Seeds travel! They can't just get up and walk to a new location, but structures on the seed may allow it to move to a new location. Many second Grade students may have blown dandelion seeds in the wind, seen helicopter like seeds fall from maple trees, witnessed acorns get carried of by squirrels, and been pricked by burrs as they walked through a field. Some of the moving forces might be wind, water, animals, and gravity. Based on the structure of each seed, can you guess how the seed moves from place to place? Lesson Plan Student Sheet
17
Day 13 Needs of Plants Lesson Plan
In class, today you will be planting some seeds with your students. The primary objective of this lesson is to teach students in a fun hands on way that seeds and plants need water and light in order to grow. Lesson Plan
18
Day 14 Life Cycle of a Plant
Like animals, plants go through a life cycle. Most plants begin life as a seed. Soon the roots begin to grow and absorb water and nutrients in the soil. Next a leaf and stem pops up. The leaf makes food using energy from the sun. Many mature plants grow flowers that. produce new seeds. Lesson Plan Student Sheet
19
Day 15 Roots Lesson Plan Student Sheet
What you see is not what you get. Many plants have root systems that are equal to or larger than the visible plant. The roots have three major jobs: Absorb water Absorb nutrients Holds the plant in the ground Stores food for the plant Lesson Plan Student Sheet
20
Day 16 Stems Lesson Plan Student Sheet
Today students will be exploring the jobs of the stem through an experiment with a white carnation. The major jobs of the stem are: Transport water from the roots to the rest of the plant. Transport sugar from the leaf to other parts of the plant. Holds the plant together Lesson Plan Student Sheet
21
Day 17 Leaves Lesson Plan Student Sheet
Leaves come in many shapes and sizes but they all share a similar job. The job of the leaves is to make food (sugar) for the plants. Students will collect leaves and make a leaf rubbing to see the “veins” in the leaf that carry the water to and the sugar away from the leaf. Lesson Plan Student Sheet Leaf Brain Pop
22
Day 18 Flower and Plant Review
The Job of the flower is to make new seeds for the plant. To make a seed pollen from a flower must mix with an ovule inside a flower. Some plants mix their own pollen and ovule inside the flower while others depend on animals, insects or the wind. Lesson Plan Student Sheet Pollination Brain Pop
