3 Apartheid Apartheid allowed for the legal segregation of whites and blacks in South Africa. It prevented blacks from being able to vote, own property wherever they wanted, attend schools where they wanted to, and many other things.

17 Rugby World Cup Win for S. Africa - 1995 The moment he became President 1994, he wanted to end old prejudices. The Springboks (Rugby team name) were dear to the hearts of South Africa's white Afrikaners and hated by the nation's black majority. By donning their emblem, Mandela reconciled a nation fractured and badly damaged by racism and hatred. With their World Cup win in 1995, Mandela’s support of the team the team’s hard work helped bridge the divide between whites and blacks in the country.

18 FIFA World Cup 2010 Mandela helped South Africa earn the honor of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
