Critter Bob and Key West: Exploring The 5 Themes of Geography By: Mrs. Bergmann
2
Location Where a place is on Earth Absolute Location: An exact spot on Earth (such as an address or coordinates) Relative Location: Where is place is in relation to another place.
3
Location Critter Bob lives in a tree at 555 Orange Road, Key West, Florida in the USA. Critter Bob loves his tree home because he lives in a palm tree. Key West Florida is in the southern part of Florida. It is about 1 hour from Miami. Cuba is South of Key West.
4
Place Place is the human and physical characteristics of a place.
5
Place- Physical Characteristics The physical characteristics of where Critter Bob lives are really neat. Key West is a beautiful island. There is a beautiful blue ocean called the Atlantic Ocean. There are a lot of sandy beaches where Critter Bob loves to lay out. There are also palm trees, orange trees. It is tropical in Key West and there are wet and dry seasons. It rains a lot there. Sometimes the rain is hard on Critter Bob since he lives in a palm tree. It is especially hard on Bob during hurricane season.
6
Place- Human Characteristics The people in Key West are amazing. There are Americans, Conchs (the native people) and many immigrants from Cuba. They celebrate many holidays including Christmas, New Year’s Eve and much more. The predominant religion is Catholic because of the colonists from long ago. People here have a laid back attitude. The cost of living is very high, so people usually have at least 2 jobs. People love to surf, scuba dive, play sports and hang out on the beach. There are also a lot of artists in Key West. Critter Bob loves the Key West Culture.
7
Movement People, goods and ideas move from place to place.
8
Movement Critter Bob works a scuba-diving shop. He has a scooter and that is how he gets to work everyday. Boats are also a very popular mode of transportation. All of the goods in Key West have to be brought in on a one-way truck. This is because there is only one highway that leads into Key West. That makes the goods very expensive. On of Critter Bob’s favorite activities is to listen to the old island mythology stories. These are stories from long ago passed on generation to generation.
9
Human-Environment Interaction Humans and the environment affect each other. – Humans depend on their environment – Humans change their environment – Humans adapt to fit into their environment
10
Critter Bob relies on his palm tree from protection and shelter. He also relies on the fish that swim in the ocean for food. The environment around Critter Bob has been changed a lot. For example, there is a highway that connects all of the Florida Keys. Also, there are many docks built in the ocean to house all of the boats. Bob must adapt to his environment. It rains a lot, so Bob is always sure to be prepared for that. He also has to put wood in his windows when hurricane season hits. This helps protect his home.
11
Region An area on earth with one or more shared, common characteristic.
12
Region Critter Bob lives in a beautiful region. Key west is part of the Florida Keys and part of the coastal and tropical south regions. It is also near the Caribbean Islands, so it shares many characteristics with those islands as well. All of these places have a warm climate with wet and dry seasons. There is also a lot of marine life around these parts including: dolphins, manatees and sharks… yikes! Bob likes to put fresh water hoses in the ocean to feed the manatees (this is also part of HEI). In a way, you might say Key West is part of the Spanish speaking region too. There are many people who speak Spanish around Key West and there are a lot of connections to Cuba. Critter Bob is trying to learn Spanish.
13
All in all, Critter Bob is a happy dude. He loves living in Key West and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
