Number Sense: fluency with numbers and operations Number Systems: using integers and rational numbers to solve real world problems Ratios and Proportional Reasoning: applying ratios, rates, and unit rates to problem solving situations Expressions and Equations: writing, interpreting, and evaluating real world problems using these representations Geometry: area, surface area, and volume Statistics and Probability: analyzing data and probability in contextual situations Mathematical Practices: the mindful habits needed to be a successful mathematician New McGraw-Hill math publication

Understanding Rates and Ratios in order to solve real life situations. Completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers Writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations Developing an understanding of statistical thinking Using geometry concepts of area, surface area, and volume to solve real world problems. **More detailed information on the CUSD website

Word problems, especially problems of the day, may seem very complicated and advanced. Students will need support in thinking about these ideas before they begin to solve the problems. Ask your student: What do you know about the problem? What do you know about the answer? Does this look like a problem you have seen before?

Students will often be encouraged to use sense- making strategies to solve mathematical problems. These strategies will support their growth. Teachers may delay showing students short cuts or standard algorithms. Please honor that delay; it is by design in order to develop a deeper understanding of the concept.

McGraw Hill Series. Students will have 2 consumable workbooks through the year. Assignments, Reteach and Enrich are in the workbooks.

Writing Ongoing practice Cross curricular Various formats Traits Speaking/Listening Daily participation points are given for active engagement in whole group and small group discussions. Students who are absent should speak with their teacher about an alternate assignment to make up daily participation points

Supply non-fiction texts on topics that interest your child Read non-fiction books aloud or with your child and have fun with non-fiction in front of your children Find books that explain how things work and why Discuss non-fiction texts and their ideas Demand use of evidence in everyday discussions, debates, and disagreements

Homework Policy Make-up work /Missed assignments: The students have an agenda and are expected to copy daily, all assignments/homework which are clearly posted in each classroom. At home practice is normally given Monday thru Thursday and is to be done promptly and brought to school completed the next day. We will use agendas to keep you informed of behavior and missing work. Check it daily. Long projects; science projects, research based learning projects, etc, that may have an extended due date should be clearly written in the agenda so that students are able to gauge their time. Students are expected to turn their work in on time. Much of class is devoted to reviewing material and formulating thoughts and ideas from this practice material. Missing work does not allow for this. This does not include students who are absent. One day is given for each day missed because of an absence.

Class Rules 1. Come to class on time and prepared. 2. Respect other people and property. 3. Be patient and caring of others. 4. Be responsible for yourself. 5. Listen to directions and do your best. First offense Warning Second offense Action plan + loss of a recess Third offense Misconduct slip/parent contacted +loss of recess(s) Continued Disruption Referral to the Dean/Principal
