Data Protection Act The Data Protection Act (DPA) is a law designed to protect personal data stored on computers or in an organised paper filing system. o Data must be collected and used fairly and inside the law o The information held must be adequate, relevant and not excessive o Data must be accurate and be kept up to date. There is a duty to keep it up to date, for example to change an address when people move. It is an offence to use software on a network (unless the licence allows it)networklicence o Data must not be kept longer than is necessary for the registered purpose o Data may not be transferred outside of the European Economic Area unless the country that the data is being sent to has a suitable data protection law. o Data must only be held and used for its intended purpose o It is an offence to sell a copy of a program

Computer Misuse Act The Computer Misuse Act 1990 introduced the power to prosecute individuals whom deliberately, and without authority, misuse computer systems. o It is an offence to accessing computer material without permission, e.g. looking at someone else's files. It is an offence to access computer material without permission with intent to commit further criminal offences, e.g. hacking into the bank's computer and wanting to increase the amount in your account. It is an offence to alter computer data without permission, e.g. writing a virus to destroy someone else's data, or actually changing the money in an account

Copyright, Designs and Patents Act This provides protection to the owners of the copyright and covers the copying of written, musical, or film works using computers. o It is an offence to rent out the software without the permission of the copyright holder The information must be kept safe and secure. This includes keeping the information backed up and away from any unauthorised access. It is an offence to give a copy of a program to a friend
