Journal – April 22, 2014 Take out your copy of Survival in Auschwitz – you will need it to answer the questions for journal today. 1)How were the Jews “processed” into the camp at Auschwitz? (p. 23-27) 2)What does Levi learn during his time at Auschwitz? (p. 27-35) 3)Find what you believe is the most powerful and interesting quotation from this chapter and write it down in your journal. Write down the page #.

Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi In your groups, share the quotations you have picked from question #3 of your journal. As a group, pick the quotation which best represents the Holocaust. Write down the quotation on the poster paper, along with a brief explanation of how you think the quotation relates to the Holocaust and one illustration. Then, tape your paper to the white board. Be prepared to defend your choice.

Primo Levi Biography (1919-1987) Industrial chemist, he wrote only in his spare time Survived a year in Auschwitz and 8 months as a refugee in the Soviet Union Survival depended on chance factors Worked in a chemistry laboratory in the camp Contracted scarlet fever just Soviets arrived avoided death march Determination to survive Levi jumped to his death in 1987 “Forgiveness is not a word of mine. It is wished upon me, because all the letters I receive, especially from young Catholic readers, take that stance. They ask me if I have forgiven. I believe that I am just a man, in my own way. I can forgive one man and not another. I can only consider justice case by case.”
