CPNP – Primary Care Role Definition 2008 The CPNP primary care (CPNP-PC) role provides wellness and illness supervision of children and their families through the processes of health promotion, assessment of acute and chronic illness, and management of disease processes and involvement in professional issues. In the role of health promotion, the CPNP-PC provides anticipatory guidance, age-appropriate counseling and primary prevention of illness. The CPNP-PC determines appropriate screening and diagnostic testing, diagnoses and treatment of common and chronic illness conditions through the use of pharmacologic, nonpharmacologic, procedural and referral regimens. The CPNP-PC provides a comprehensive treatment plan and evaluates outcomes, ultimately reflecting current evidence and research findings with the goal of care to achieve optimum quality of life with the prevention of illness. All arenas of CPNP-PC practice focus on professionally-based goals and objectives. The CPNP-PC practices in a variety of health care settings including but not limited to the home, hospital, ambulatory and school-based clinics, private practice and sub-specialty clinics.
