America Gets Angry The De Lome Letter A letter written by the Spanish minister to the U.S., Enrique Dupuy de Lome; The letter criticized President McKinley as “weak” Published by the New York Journal Remember the Maine! The U.S.S. Main is sent to Cuba to bring back U.S. citizens from Cuba; February 15, 1898 – The U.S.S. Main explodes in the harbor of Havana; – 260 killed; – No one knows why the ship exploded…. Many Americans call for war with Spain

America Goes to War Spain tries to appease the U.S. – But… U.S. declares war on April 20, 1898 U.S. invades the Philippians and captures the capital, Manila; U.S. naval blockade of Cuba; 17,000 U.S. troops land in Cuba in June 1898; – Rough Riders: cavalry forces lead by T. Roosevelt – Battle of San Juan Hill U.S. troops invade Puerto Rico

Treaty of Paris Spain signs a cease fire on August 12, 1898 U.S. and Spain meet in Paris in December to negotiate a treaty: – Spain frees Cuba – Spain turns over Guam and Puerto Rico to U.S. – Philippians sold to U.S. for $20 million To be or not to be imperialists… – Treaty of Paris approved on Feb. 6, 1899
