BLACK BULL at The Lascaux Caves in France ART MASTERPIECE ~ KINDERGARTEN ~ SEPTEMBER LESSON
2
In 1940, four teenagers & their dog accidentally stumbled across a hole in the hillside overlooking a village in France. This discovery became one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th Century. They found caves filled with prehistoric paintings; some of the earliest works of art found on earth. They became known as: The Lascaux Caves

By the 1950’s this location became a huge tourist attraction. Unfortunately that jeopardized the condition of the paintings as they began to deteriorate. In order to preserve them, the caves had to be closed down. The caves contained many figures, animals and handprints in only a few colors. Let’s have a discussion about this…

Why would they use a cave wall instead of paper? Why did they use few colors? What made animals so important to them? How can you tell that the animals are moving? These questions help us explore all of the possibilities of art.

This ancient artwork helps to teach the importance of art. They also tell us a very old story without using words. The pictures they drew tell us what the people were feeling and what was important to them.
