Context: Skateboards and associated equipment and technologies. GCSE - ENGINEERING Preliminary Material

Exploring the exam theme task... Your task is to explore all possibilities in relation to the given exam theme. 1.Use the mind map as a starting point to then further gather information and research in relation to the theme (internet, existing products, etc...) 2.Use the given slide templates to input the information you have found out in an interesting way for you to successfully remember. 3.Begin sketching some possible product ideas /solutions and add them to your holiday design task sheets. Date due: Tuesday 16 th April 2012 You will be presenting this information back to the whole class within the first lesson back after the Easter holidays.

Mind map... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember Context: Skateboards and equipment.

Types of products... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember Context: Skateboards and equipment. Gather a range of images/products that fulfil the context. Find links to websites that show example products. Products to think about; traditional skateboards, stunt skateboards,

Structure and form... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember Look at a skateboard and think about the basic elements – the board/deck, wheels and trucks,

Materials, components and properties... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember What materials are used for the deck, wheels, trucks, ball bearings. Why have certain materials been used over others? Useful links: o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJUKiStai6A&feature=player_embedded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJUKiStai6A&feature=player_embedded o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rpHJKZFgBs4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rpHJKZFgBs4 o http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_bearing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_bearing Ensure that you research: o Deck o Wheels o Trucks o Ball bearings

Construction... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember How is a skateboard constructed? What components make up a skateboard? Useful links: o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr1mKe006vo&feature=player_embedded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr1mKe006vo&feature=player_embedded o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BOWs0y9I6VU http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BOWs0y9I6VU o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=m0KtjIqBOKI http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=m0KtjIqBOKI o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DZGWn4LFAyw http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DZGWn4LFAyw o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DZGWn4LFAyw http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DZGWn4LFAyw There are 5 main components to think about: o Deck o Grip tape o Trucks o Wheels o Wheel bearings

Production processes... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember Gather a range of images/products that fulfil the context. Find links to websites that show example products. Products to think about; traditional skateboards, stunt skateboards, Useful links: o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQMn625MF5w&feature=player_embedded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQMn625MF5w&feature=player_embedded o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FOtbEfdfk9o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FOtbEfdfk9o o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CGjG0UWJVOs http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CGjG0UWJVOs Click on the following websites to see the process: o http://www.madehow.com/Volume-6/Skateboard.htmlhttp://www.madehow.com/Volume-6/Skateboard.html o http://tjorr.iweb.bsu.edu/ITDPT303/page2/page2.html http://tjorr.iweb.bsu.edu/ITDPT303/page2/page2.html o http://www.instructables.com/id/Use-a-Vacuum-cleaner-to- build-your-own-Skateboard/?ALLSTEPS http://www.instructables.com/id/Use-a-Vacuum-cleaner-to- build-your-own-Skateboard/?ALLSTEPS

Fixings and maintenance... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember Gather a range of images/products that would be used within the construction of a skateboard. E.g. Nuts, bolts, etc…

Finishing... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember Research into different finishing techniques. E.g. painting, varnishing, etc…

Technologies and tools used... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember Gather a range of images/products that fulfil the context. Find links to websites that show example products. Products to think about; traditional skateboards, stunt skateboards,

Alternative propulsion methods... Think 5 Summarise with ‘5’ things to remember Use the following web link to research into alternate propulsion: http://skateboardproduction.weebly.com/alternative-propulsion-methods.html Possibilities to consider? Propulsion methodDescription Electric motorAn electric motor is mounted as a replacement for the bearings, in order to provide extra power. Jet engineA jet engine is attached to the rear of the board's deck (either on top or the underside) and is fired to boost power
