2. Causes Sea level rise is caused by two main factors: 1. The added water coming from melting of land ice 2. The expansion of sea water as it warms up.

5. Global sea level rose about 17 centimeters in the last century. The rate in this decade, is nearly double. If it keeps increasing, the sea level by the end of this century will be from 7 to 23 inches higher than it was in 1990.

6. Why does this matter? Rising sea level is a major threat to people living near the ocean. Some low lying areas will start flooding more frequently, or even submerge completely. It can also interfere with important coastal ecosystems, such as mangrove forests and coral reefs.
