2 Classroom Activity The students are currently studying Shakespeare in literature. The teacher saw that most of the students were having trouble understanding Shakespeare’s writing. She asked the students to come up with a creative way to help them understand. They decided to attend a performance of Romeo and Juliet at The Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern as a field trip to help them grasp a full understanding of Shakespeare’s work.

3 Role Of The Teacher The role of the teacher in progressivism is to direct and incorporate learning activities so that students can find a purpose.

4 Role Of The Student Progressivism is a student-centered philosophy that promotes students to learn by doing. Students in progressivism strive to become brilliant problem solvers and socially aware of the world around them.

5 Pros Pros: Students pick what they want to learn about; topic is something they are interested in. They are active in their own learning. Promotes critical thinking. Students have to think for themselves instead of just looking the answer.

6 Cons Cons: Students are not given routine or structure in their environment. Students are not learning the information that needs to be learned. Test scores lower.

7 John Dewey Dewey was born on October 20, 1859. After graduating college, Dewey became a teacher in Vermont. Dewey started to study philosophies. Dewey became interested in human experiences. He died on June 1, 1952.

8 Dewey on Education He was a strong supporter of progressive education. He believed learning should be done by a hands on approach. He published several theories supporting progressive education. He felt students and teachers should learn together.
