3 Buddy Software This program is an Educational Intranet. The program offers teachers thousands of worksheets and hundreds of PowerPoint presentations. The interactive activities are ideal for school computer laboratories where students can recap lessons and brush up on topics. This program is especially suited for the majority of schools which do not have adequate internet connectivity.

5 About the Buddy Intranet The Buddy Intranet attempts to make learning fun and teaching easier. Teachers can have the program on their own computers in their classrooms. I teach using PowerPoints. The children find lessons much more interesting.

6 About the Buddy Intranet In computer laboratories students can revise lessons done in class. Students can also research information for projects. I can revise and practise things I learned in class. I can look up information for projects.

7 The Main Screen and Options This section explains the main screen and how to access sections. You are given an overview of the program. INTRANET

8 This is the program main screen. Each button on the screen takes you to another menu. The menus have hundreds of interactive computer activities and PowerPoints.

9 HOW TO SELECT AN OPTION: To select a topic click on its button. On the left of the description is a button or hyperlink. Each option has a description.

10 OPTIONS IN THE BOXES DOWN THE LEFT OF THE SCREEN AND ACROSS THE TOP OF THE SCREEN To select one of these options click on the text inside the box.

11 All these options develop maths skills.

12 All these options develop English Language skills. For each section start with the first activity in that section.

13 These options develop Afrikaans Language skills.

14 This section has constructive fun activities, all of which teach skills.

15 OPTIONS IN BOXES DOWN THE LEFT OF THE SCREEN AND ACROSS THE TOP OF THE SCREEN: These offer mainly courses and reference material.

16 When you select an option, a sub-menu opens.

17 Each item on a menu is an activity or a link to another menu. Click a menu option. A Typical Menu

18 To learn words, this activity focuses on recognizing words. The child clicks on the word which matches the word in the yellow block. A correct answer is rewarded with a smiley face and the man climbs the stairs.

19 For this activity go into the early mathematics section. Click a menu option. Another Typical Early Activity

20 Click the ‘Go’ button to start an activity. This basic activity develops counting skills.

21 Click the numbers in numeric order. The numbers rearrange.

22 There are also interactive world maps – these make learning easy and fun. ‘Explore the World’ has maps of the world and countries.

23 The Library has a lot of stories, some with PowerPoint illustrations. There is reading material in both English and Afrikaans.

24 Here you learn about space and the planets.

25 This section has Life Skills lesson materials.

26 All the menus have more than 1000 PowerPoint presentations on various subjects. This is very useful for presenting lessons, and also a great help to students wanting to revise work.

27 This section offers courses in computer basics, keyboard skills, word processing, spreadsheets & PowerPoints.

28 You might be looking for some help in a maths topic. For that open the Junior Mathematics series of menus.

29 The options in Subject Menus take you to other menus with a huge number of section options. All these options take you to menus with a large number of PowerPoint lessons and activities. Menus call up other Menus

30 All the menu options on the main screen take you to other menus with more options. Browse the Menus to Find what you Need In the Buddy Intranet you must browse for options or use the Index to find something specific.

31 Activities start from simple basics and develop to activities for the higher grades. The ‘For Teachers’ option has over 1000 worksheets and a lot of tools for teachers.

33 Thousands of Worksheets There are many more tools.

34 It is useful to be able to create your own maths worksheets. This opens a slide show which shows you how to use the work sheet maker. Click this button to open the work sheet maker. For foundation phase you can also create alphabet and writing activity worksheets.

35 To search, click the ‘Index’ link. It is useful to be able to search for an item in the program.

36 To do this, open the Lesson Planner Sheet and make a printout. You need to be able to keep a record of lessons and where to find them.

37 This option takes you to a screen where lesson plans will be recorded.

38 These options take you to subject menus where lessons or courses are recorded.

39 A typical course record. Details and objectives. For each course you have ten of these sections in which you record menu paths to the lessons you want to use.

41 How to use the Index You can search for a document which has the search text in the title. Once found, you open the menu which contains the document. From the menu open the document. View, print or save the document. Exit

42 On the main screen this button opens a presentation showing how to use the index. Click this button to open the Index.

43 This is the Index screen. The contents of all the menus show here. The main section title shows at the top, and on the right. You can scroll down to view all the menus. If you click on the ‘Go to Menu’ button for a section, the menu will open.

44 Type your search text in this box. Keep your search text short rather than long. After entering your search text press Enter, then click the Find button.

45 Type your search text. multiply Press Enter.

46 Click the Find button.

47 If this is not what you are looking for, click the Find button again. You will be taken to the second occurrence of the text. The first occurrence of the text you are looking for appears opposite the red cell in the margin.

48 If it is what you are looking for click the ‘Go to Menu’ button for that section - on the right of the red cell in the margin.

49 The menu containing the text you were looking for opens. You can now open any option on the menu by clicking its link.

50 Use these options to print the open document or to save it to your flash drive. Click the X to close the document.

51 You can search from anywhere in the index. Type your text and press Enter. In the column against the left margin click on the cell you want to search from. Click the Find button.

52 To get back to the top of the index click the Top button.

53 Working from the Index makes it much easier to find things in the menus. Recording everything on a lesson planner makes repeating any lesson in the future much easier.

54 How to use the Lesson Planner When you find programs to use in lessons, you need to keep a record of them. You do this on the Lesson Planner. Use the Lesson Planner to build up courses or a series of lessons. Exit

55 On the main screen this button opens a lesson planner sheet.

56 Lessons are recorded in blocks 1, 2, 3 etc. The Lesson Planner. On the planner you can record the path to the PowerPoints or lessons you are using.

60 What you Need You will need to have your subject area installed on the computer you use in class. You will need a record of the menus and lessons you want to use. You will need a data projector.

61 Prepare Your Lessons The Buddy Intranet gives you access to hundreds of PowerPoints and Activities to use in your lessons. Teaching and learning will become a new world both to yourself and your students. But before you can get going it will be necessary to do a little preparation.

62 To do this, open your subject folder on your computer. You need to keep a record of your lessons and where to find them. In your subject folder double click the ‘Lesson Planner’ to open it. Open the Lesson Planner Make a printout of the ‘Lesson Planner’.

64 Select Your Lessons. You will need to find and record the activities you want to use. The easiest way to do this is to use the Index. Open the Index.

If it is not what you want click ‘Find’ again. In this way search until you find the menu which has the options you want.

66 Here you find references to clouds in two menus. You now need to open the menus. The green bar separates menus.

68 When the menu button appears, click on it.

69 Open the lessons which deal with your topic, and record the names of those you want to use. The menu opens.

70 In the Index, the path to your lesson is: 1: Main section: Earth Science 2: Name of first menu: Weather Science Notes 3: Names of activities: Record this information on your Lesson Planner. The title of the sub-section.

72 Present the Lessons When you now teach this lesson, select activities according to the record on your Lesson Planner. Children become actively involved. After the lesson, follow up with worksheets.

76 The Lessons you have Prepared Save your Lesson Planner sheets in a file together with your normal work plans. When you find other material you can use, include it on the relevant Lesson Plan. In this way create lessons which you can use again year after year.

78 Internet vs. Buddy Intranet The internet has a huge amount of data and information on all topics. The Buddy Intranet has much less information, but it is all about education. INTRANET

79 Internet vs. Intranet It is not easy to find what you want on the internet – there are so many other options. The Buddy Intranet is only about education – it is much easier to find what you need. INTRANET

80 Internet vs. Intranet At school there is not enough time to search the internet for what you need. With Buddy Intranet the searching has already been done for you. INTRANET

81 Internet vs. Intranet When you find what you need, it is only one thing or option. With Buddy Intranet - when you find what you need you have a whole menu of options. INTRANET

82 What the Internet gives you A huge amount of data to search through for what you need. A lot of the things you find have to be paid for or can’t be downloaded. It is not always easy to find something again. The Internet is very time consuming.

83 What Buddy Intranet gives you Lessons from Grade R to Grade 7. Lessons on all the subjects. Hundreds of interactive computer activities. Thousands of worksheets and exercises. Everything is sorted and in menus. INTRANET

84 Advantages of the Buddy Intranet No internet connection required. No computer network required. No need to contract to a network company to maintain a network. The savings from the above are enormous. INTRANET

85 Advantages of the Buddy Intranet All teachers will have the Buddy Intranet on their own computers. This brings technology into the classroom. Learning becomes fun. Teaching becomes fun. INTRANET

86 Disadvantages of the Buddy Intranet The Buddy Intranet does not have nearly as much data as the Internet has. But the data it does have is organized and easy to find and use. INTRANET

87 What’s in it for Students? On the Internet you browse – this does take time. On the Buddy Intranet you go to something specific. INTRANET

110 I right click on the shaded text. In the drop down menu I click the ‘Copy’ option. Copy

111 Doing a Project I go to my word processor. The Moon I right click on the page and click the ‘Paste’ option. Paste

112 Doing a Project The text might need some editing. The Moon I click where blank spaces need to be removed and press Delete.

113 Doing a Project To add a picture I click ‘Insert’ on the menu bar. The Moon I click the ‘Picture’ or ‘Image’ option. After editing the text looks better. I find the picture I want and click ‘Insert’ or ‘OK’. I open the ‘BuddySI’ folder on the C drive. In the ‘BuddySI’ folder I open the ‘Clip Art’ folder.

114 Doing a Project The picture of the moon goes into my project but it pushes the text out of the way. The Moon I right click on the picture. I click the ‘Format Picture’ or ‘Wrap’ option, depending on the word processor I am using.

115 Doing a Project In MSWord I then click ‘Layout’ and ‘Square’. The Moon In Open Office I click ‘Wrap’ and ‘Page Wrap’.

116 Doing a Project The Moon The text now wraps around the picture and I can move the picture to where I want it.

117 Doing a Project In this way I add what I need to my project. The Moon But there is something very important. I can’t just copy text into my project. I have to write as much as I can on my own, in my own words.

119 Installing the Intranet The program is installed from 4 DVDs. From DVD-1 the SI folder is unzipped to the C drive. From DVD-2 the BuddySI folder is unzipped to the C drive From DVD-3 the SI-vocab and another BuddySI folder are unzipped to the C drive. From DVD-4 two smaller folders are copied to the C drive and Open Office and two smaller programs are installed. From DVD-4 the program shortcut icon is copied and pasted on the desktop. Exit You are copying 17GB of data, and the installation process will take in the region of two hours per pc.

Install SI-vocab and BuddySI folders from DVD-3. Step 4: Install simultaneously on three computers.

123 Installing from DVD-4 To do this next step you will have to be logged on as the Administrator. Do step 4 of the installation while the installation continues on the next three computers. On DVD-4 double click the ‘INSTALLATION- Finish’ file to open it. Click 4 buttons to complete the installation

124 Installing the Desktop Icon On DVD-4 right click on the yellow star short cut icon. On the drop down menu click the ‘Copy’ option. Right click anywhere on the desktop. On the drop down menu click the ‘Paste’ option. Exit Done!

125 System Requirements You will need any version of Windows installed. You will need a copy of Excel 2000 or later on the computer. It is NOT necessary to have the latest of everything! You do not need a network! You don’t need internet. That’s it!
