5 One Common Voice – One Plan Plan: Develop Action Plan
Begin with the end in mind… Where are we now? Where do we want to be? How will we get there? This is your action plan!!!

6 Required Elements of a School Improvement Plan Activity
One Common Voice – One Plan Plan: Develop Action Plan Required Elements of a School Improvement Plan Activity On the provided copies of the following three slides, review the requirements and highlight the elements that apply to your school. Link to Required Elements of a School Improvement Plan: In Michigan’s School Improvement Action Portfolio, there are three pages of Required Elements. These pages are grids with x’s in boxes. The first page has the Required Elements that are built into the SIP template. The next two pages are Additional Required Strategies that need to be included in the plan, but are not in the template. These elements will eventually be in the MDE template, but aren’t there yet! The next slide shows the cover of the Action Portfolio and the slide after that shows what the grids look like.

7 One Common Voice – One Plan
Provide teams with the copies of the three pages of grids available in the Action Portfolio or at: This is what school teams can highlight to ensure that they add the additional parts to the SI plan required by their building.

10 One Common Voice – One Plan Plan: Develop Action Plan
Determine Strategy Statements Strategy Statement (Adult Actions) Linked to the measurable objective which is linked to the student goal Uses specific, planned, research and/or evidence-based instructional practices Addresses system practices that were identified as challenges in the needs assessment Focuses on maximizing each student’s growth and individual success Done to, or with, students to develop a specific result

11 Criteria for Strategy Statement
One Common Voice – One Plan Plan: Develop Action Plan Having clarified/discussed gaps and challenges utilizing your data, the next step is to merge these ideas into 3-4 teacher strategy statements (which may be grade level specific). Criteria for Strategy Statement Begin each statement with “Teachers will...” (and/or which specific group of teachers). Use an action verb of observable behavior which must be done. Write clear, concise statements that describe what you intend to accomplish. (Be specific.) Make sure each teacher strategy addresses the issue and connects back to the measurable objective. 12 Examples of Strategy Statements:
One Common Voice – One Plan Plan: Develop Action Plan Examples of Strategy Statements: General education teachers, in collaboration with Students with Disabilities teachers, will plan a series of meetings to discuss potential interventions and support systems for at-risk students in learning geometric vocabulary and transformations. K-12 teachers will create lesson plans based on GLCEs & HSCEs, specifically incorporating a variety of instructional strategies. Teachers in grades K-12 will identify gaps in their mathematics curriculum based on the GLCEs & HSCEs. Teachers in grades K-12 will use the identified gaps information to begin a search of available research-based resources and document findings. Pink = Teachers will Blue = Observable Action Verb Green = Intended Accomplishment Courtesy of Jackson County ISD

14 One Common Voice – One Plan Connecting Measurable Objective Statement and Strategy Statement
Student Goal Statement: All students will improve their reading skills across the curriculum schoolwide. Strategy Statement: Teachers will use Thinking Maps, specifically flow maps for sequencing to teach critical thinking skills to increase student capacity for retelling. Does your strategy statement include the phrase “Teachers will...”? Does your strategy statement include an action verb of observable behavior? Is your strategy statement clear, concise, and describe what you intend to accomplish? Does your strategy statement connect back to your student goal? Is your strategy statement appropriate for the intended subgroup? Process with group.
