2. Introduction
A concrete takeoff requires the estimator to measure a combination of items:
Concrete
Forms
Rebar
Finishes and miscellaneous items
The concrete is usually detailed on the drawings, while the other items have to be inferred from the information about the concrete.

3. Assembly Takeoff
Estimators should proceed assembly-by-assembly in their concrete takeoff.
An assembly is a component of the job that consists of a number of items, e.g. a pad footing comprising:
Concrete
Forms
Rebar etc.
Recommended procedure
Take off assembly one.
Measure the concrete first.
Assess formwork and other required items.
After completing assembly one, pass on to assembly two and so on.

4. Measuring Notes - Concrete
Concrete measured in cubic yards net in place
No deductions for reinforcing steel
No deductions for openings less than 1 cu. ft.
Concrete measured in separate categories
Pile caps
Footings
Etc.
Different mixes of concrete measured separately

5. Measuring Notes - Formwork
Generally measured in square feet of contact area
i.e. the surface of formwork that is in contact with the concrete
Classified into the same categories as concrete
Curved surfaces measured separately
Bulkheads, blockouts, and edge forms measured separately
Forms measured over concrete openings such as windows in walls
Edges, grooves, chases, keyways, chamfers measured in linear feet
Forms to circular columns measured in linear feet

6. Measuring Notes - Finishes
Concrete finishes measured in square feet
Classified in terms of what is being finished: slabs, walls, columns, stairs, etc.
Curing slabs measured in square feet
Vapor barriers measured in square feet (add 10% to allow for laps)
Welded wire mesh measured in square feet (add 10% to allow for laps)

7. Measuring Notes – Rebar and Other Items
Bar reinforcing steel is measured in linear feet and converted to a weight by multiplying the lengths by the unit weight per foot.
Inserts such as anchor bolts are described and enumerated.
Inserts such as waterstops are measured in linear feet.
Expansion joints are measured in linear feet stating the size of joint and the type of material used.
Grout to anchor bolts and base plates are measured in cubic feet.
Saw cuts to concrete are measured in linear feet.

8. Takeoff Exercise
Takeoff the concrete work for the house example shown on Figure 3.5 drawings
