The Treaty of Waitangi/ Te Tiriti o Waitangi
By the end of this lesson I will: know the differences between the two language versions of the TOW. Starter: List 3 things that NZ was like before the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840.

Using the textbook ‘Te Mana o Te Tiriti – the Living Treaty’, turn to page 24. We are going to read about the events that happened around the signing of the TOW

Article One - Power English Maori
Chiefs give the Queen “Sovereignty” – rangatiratanga Total power over New Zealand and it’s people Maori gave up their authority over NZ Maori Chiefs give Queen “Governorship” - Kawanatanga Control but not over the Maori, Maori kept their mana/ authority

Article Two- Land (part 1)
English Gave British ‘pre-emption’ Only the Crown could buy land from the Maori Maori Crown given the first right to buy (Maori had to offer land to the Crown first) Maori could then sell it to others if Crown said no.

Article Two- Land (part 2)
English Gives Crown chiefs “full, exclusive and undisturbed possession of lands, estates, forests, fisheries and other properties” But they still belonged to the Queen Maori Crown gives chiefs Rangtiratanga (chieftainship/ total power) of “lands, villages, and all their treasures (taonga)

Queens gives Maori “all rights and privileges of British Citizens” Have all rules, rights and laws of British Protection of Crown Maori Queen gives Maori “citizenship” Maori use their own law/ ways of controlling, but only settlers under British law. Protection of Crown

Who Signed the Treaty? About 500 Maori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi. Only about 50 signed on the 6th Feb and the others in other parts of the country as it was taken around. Hone Heke is the first Chief to sign it. William Hobson signed it on behalf of Queen Victoria.

Why did Maori Chiefs sign the TOW?
Turn to page 26 in the textbook. Write down 3 reasons that Chiefs DID sign and 3 reasons that Chiefs DID NOT sign the TOW.
