How Membership Grows/Contracts, (3 Rs) o The Membership Development activity involves three key areas: retaining present members who have not renewed recruiting new members recovering those who have not renewed in past (arrears) could also include recognition of members
15
Recruitment o Member-Get-A-Member program (MGM) Through the Member-Get-a-Member (MGM) program, IEEE rewards your efforts in recruiting new members. Your local IEEE Section can also benefit. MGM is at: o Conference Member Recruitment (CMR) This program offers an incentive to those who join the IEEE at a technical conference. Each higher-grade, full-dues paying IEEE membership applicant is given one year of membership to one of IEEE's 38 Technical Societies. CMR is at: http://www.ieee.org/about/volunteers/membership_development/mgm.html http://www.ieee.org/about/volunteers/membership_development/cmr.html
16
Retaining members Emphasis on engagement as a preventive/proactive retention strategy: o Local outreaches send a personal message on value of membership o Involve student members in activities to see value in their membership – long term o Utilize local communications: Newsletter and Website to provide information o First Year Member outreach o Don’t wait until renewal or when members are in arrears o Pre-arrears outreach in January o Post-arrears outreach end of February/early March Slide 16

34
Welcome to IEEE GOLD
35
About IEEE Graduates of the Last Decade o An IEEE member who has graduated from their first professional degree within the first ten years is a GOLD member.(GOLD member – industry and Graduate Student Member falls under both Student and GOLD category) o IEEE GOLD is the Young Professionals groups for IEEE o There are currently 27 active GOLD groups in Region 10 GOLD Vision: IEEE GOLD will be a global community of enthusiastic, dynamic, and innovative young professionals engaged for the benefit of humanity. GOLD Mission: To inspire, energize, empower, and engage young professionals to envision and realize their dreams.
36
What can GOLD do for my section/society? Here are some benefits of having a GOLD Affinity Group: o Improve retention of student members once they graduate o Sections receive a reimbursement of $3 per IEEE GOLD member (they are full IEEE members) o Provide a different perspective, more volunteers to help with the section o Open up new opportunities for the Section (industry, academia and within the IEEE) o IEEE GOLD members are full grade IEEE members who have received their first professional degree within ten years.
37
Why should people be a member of IEEE GOLD? Here are some benefits that are unique to IEEE GOLD o Access to the IEEE Mentoring Connection program o Access to discounted rates on IEEE conferences and IEEE Corporate discounts o Be part of a network of over 60,000 Young Professionals o Take part and attend professional development events in the IEEE section and around the world o Lots of great professional development opportunities through becoming an IEEE volunteer o Receive Quarterly IEEE GOLDRush Young Professionals Newsletter
38
How do I start a GOLD Affinity Group in my Section or Geographical Council? o It is an easy process! o Find six members from your section or geographic council interested in organising GOLD activities and fill out a petition with each member’s name and signature, the name of your section, and the name of your group’s organizer (who serves as interim chair until the election of a chair at one of your first meetings). o Submit the petition to your section’s executive committee for approval and then send to IEEE Member and Geographic Activities staff at the Operations Centre, in Piscataway, N.J. For the petition form, please visit: http://www.ieee.org/societies_communities/geo_activities/forms _petitions/DF_IEEE_MIG_MCT_63099 http://www.ieee.org/societies_communities/geo_activities/forms _petitions/DF_IEEE_MIG_MCT_63099

R10 Life Membership 10 Minutes Expresso Kunio Tada R10 LM Chair, 2013
47
Region 10 Life Member Activities Kunio TADA, R10 Life Members Coordinator e-mail: kunio.tada@jcom.home.ne.jpkunio.tada@jcom.home.ne.jp 1. What is IEEE Life Member? Life Member is the senior membership status in the IEEE members’ life cycle. Life Member ratio in total of Fellows, Senior Members and Members is as follows: R1~R10 9.1% (27,327/299,214) R10 2.3% (1,273/56,015) However, Life Member increase rate is large in R10. 2. Benefits of IEEE Life Membership Dues and regional assessments are waived. Society fees are also waived. Reduced member rates are applied at IEEE sponsored conferences. Life Members continue to receive the same benefits that are available to other IEEE members.
48
3. How can you become a Life Member? oFirst, you have to attain the age of 65 years, AND oSecond, you have been a member of IEEE for such period that the sum of your age and your years of membership reaches 100 years. oTherefore, it takes a long time to become a Life Member. 1. For example, if you became a member when you were 30 years old, and if you have retained your membership for 35 years till you become 65 years old, your age 65 and your 35 years of membership sum up to 100. You become a Life Member at the age 65, which is minimal. 2. On the other hand, when you got affiliated with the IEEE at rather elderly age, for example, at 50, you can be a Life Member when you reach 75 years old. oSuggestions induced from the above facts: a). Your affiliation with the IEEE at younger age is most encouraged. b). Your retaining the membership and involvement of IEEE activities for many years are highly recommended. Life Members represent an invaluable repository of personal experiences involving the history of areas of interest to IEEE.
49
4. Life Members Affinity Group ( LMAG ) LMAG is a local unit of an IEEE organizational unit, constituted by IEEE members who have obtained Life Member Status and established by petition, concerned to represent and fulfill the needs of the local IEEE Life Members. LMAGs can help to enable Life Members to retain active IEEE associations, contribute to the social good in their communities, advance IEEE´s professional interests and enjoy each other's company. The IEEE Life Members Committee believes that keeping Life Members active and engaged is a key component to the success of the IEEE in local IEEE activities. There are 80 LMAGs now in the world. In Region 10, there are only five LMAGs---- Bombay Section, Kansai Section, New South Wales Section, South Australia Section, and Tokyo Section as shown in the next slide. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged to form new LMAGs in the Region 10.
