23. The French The French saw all the riches coming out of the New World…and wanted to get their share. They wanted gold, like the Spanish… If they couldn’t find gold, then they wanted to find what Columbus had been looking for… a way to get to Asia.

24. French exploration French explorers traveled up and down the coast of North America, going up every river, looking for a way to get through to the other side. They never found a waterway to the Pacific…but they did discover the Great Lakes and a big river… The Mississippi

25. Good as gold! The French didn’t find gold, but they found something almost as valuable in the courts of Europe… fur! French fur trappers came to Canada and hunted beavers and foxes…but they needed help. They paid the Native Americans to help them find furs.

26. Of all the European groups that arrive in the New World, the French get along with the Native Americans the best. The French needed the Native Americans cooperation.
