Stratus [stratus] The word stratus is a Latin word which means “flattened” or “spread out” or “layers” Stratus Clouds

Stratus Clouds are named for the way that they look in the sky. When you see stratus clouds, they will form as a flat layer of clouds that are spread out in the sky and are low to the ground. They might remind you of a gray blanket across the sky. Stratus clouds often bring precipitation such as rain or snow. Remember: The word stratus means “flattened” or “spread out” or “layers.”

Stratus Cloud Picture 1 Can you see how this stratus cloud looks like a flat blanket that is covering the sky?

Stratus Cloud Picture 2 Stratus clouds form in layers and are found down low in the atmosphere.

Stratus Cloud Picture 3 Remember, the word stratus means “flattened” or “spread out” or ‘layers.” Stratus clouds may seem kind of dull and boring, but look out – they often bring rain!
