The Periodic Table Chemistry Goal Three
2
The periodic table is used to identify the basic organization of elements.
3
Every periodic table will have a square for each element with the following: a) atomic number – the number of protons in each atom b) atomic mass – average mass of the element c) element name d) element symbol
4
The elements on the periodic table are arranged numerically by atomic number.
5
A horizontal row on the periodic table is called a period. Families, aka groups, are vertical columns of elements on the periodic table. Elements in the same family have similar properties. Periods Family
6
There is a zig zag line on the right side of the table. It divides the periodic table into two sections of elements, metals and nonmetals.
7
Metals A major group of elements on the left of the zigzag line. Examples: ▫Sodium (Na), Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), and Aluminum (Al) The majority of the elements are metals. Sodium Metal Calcium Metal Iron Ore Aluminum
8
Nonmetals A major group of elements on the right of the zigzag line. Examples of nonmetals: Chlorine (Cl), Oxygen (O), Sulfur (S), and Iodine (I) Chlorine Gas Liquid Oxygen Sulfur Crystals Iodine
9
Chemical symbols show which elements compose a substance. ▫Symbols are written with one, two, or three letters ▫The first letter is always capitalized. ▫The second or third letter is always lowercase. ▫Each element has a different symbol. Oxygen = O Sodium = Na Unununium = Uuu
