Did You Know? Dinosaur communities were separated by both time and geography. The Mesozoic Era was called the "age of dinosaurs“. During the Mesozoic Era there were three geologic time periods that happened one after the other: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods. Different dinosaur species lived during each of these three periods.

Dinosaurs of the … 248-231 million years ago

Triassic Time Period By: Second Grade PAT In the mid-Triassic, dinosaurs were socket- toothed, crocodile-like reptiles. At the end of the Triassic, the first dinosaurs were small and lightly built, mostly about 10- 15 feet long (3 to 4.5 m). They were carnivores or omnivores. Most walked on two legs and were probably very fast. Some species during this time included the Dilophosaurus, Coelophysis, Saltopus, and the Lesothosaurus.

Coelophysis Time Period By: Janie Vanzant and Ramiro Zarate Coelophysis lived during the late Triassic period, about 210-202 million years ago.Triassic period

Coelophysis Appearance By: Ramiro Zarate The Coelophysis was a small dinosaur. It was slim and weighed 50 - 65 pounds. The Coelophysis was 10 feet long. The head of the Coelophysis was bright in color. It had a long neck. Its teeth were like steak knives. The Coelophysis had strong three fingered hands with sharp claws.

Coelophysis Behavior By: Janie Vanzant The Coelophysis was a meat-eating dinosaur. It was a small dinosaur but a fast lizard eater. It would run fast on its powerful legs while stretching its tail out to help it balance while it darted around. When it would get close to an animal it would stick out its three fingered hands and grab the animal. The Coelophysis would stretch out its long neck to snap at insects and lizards. It even ate smaller dinosaurs. The Coelophysis was probably a scavenger as well as a hunter and it ate almost anything it could find.

Coelophysis Environment By: Ramiro Zarate The Coelophysis lived during the late Triassic period. It lived in the south western part of the United States. The land was covered with deserts, forests and rivers. They lived in the desert and gathered around dry water holes that were hot and dry. Their bones were found on Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.

Coelophysis Interesting Facts By: Janie Vanzant The Coelophysis was like a reptile and they were very fast. The way you pronounce their name is Ci-lo-fi-sis. Their name means “Hollow Form”. The Coelophysis was among the earliest small dinosaurs known. The Coelophysis was also one of the first meat eating dinosaur. A jumble of fossils from more than one hundred Coelophysis skeletons were found at the Ghost Ranch Quarry in New Mexico in 1947. Two forms of Coelophysis fossils have been found. One form is thinner and more delicate than the other. It is thought that these are the bones of the female dinosaurs. A Coelophysis skull from the Carnagie Museum of Natural History was brought into space by the space shuttle Endeavor on Jan. 22, 1998.

Dinosaurs of the … 213-144 million years ago

Apatosaurus Time Period By: Daniel Cowley and Michael Gensheimer Apatosaurus lived during the late Jurassic period, about 157-146 million years ago Jurassic period

Apatosaurus Appearance By: Michael Gensheimer The Apatosaurus was 65 to 100 feet long. Its body was more than 60 fully grown elephants. It had a long neck. From their head to their shoulders was more than 20 feet long. It weighed 50 to 150 tones. The Apatosaurus had a big head that was made out of 15 vertebrae. The Apatosaurus had a big skull but a small brain. They could raise their head 17 feet off the ground. The Apatosaurus had a long tail. Their footprints were about three feet long. They had long claws!

Apatosaurus Behavior By: Daniel Cowley These are the ways the Apatosaurus attacked and protected itself. It could use its long tail to strike out at enemies. A fully grown apatosaurus may have stood up on its long back legs to stomp on or hit its enemies with its front legs. They were stupid but may have been a solitary animal. They were a plant eater. Since it had such a long neck, it could eat the leaves off the tall forest trees. It spent a lot of time chewing because it had flat teeth.

Apatosaurus Environment By: Daniel Cowley The bones of the Apatosaurus were found in Utah in the 1870s. The Apatosaurus walked through the forest, plains and swamps. The first plants appeared in the last dinosaur period.

Apatosaurus Interesting Facts By: Michael Gensheimer The Apatosaurus was one of the most familiar dinosaurs of all. It was also one of the largest dinosaurs that ever lived in the Jurassic Period. It was named by Othiel C. Marshal. It was a member of the Sauropod group of dinosaurs. Its name means “deceptive lizard”. It was once called the Brontosaurus. Apatosaurus fossils which were buried were pushed to the top of the earth and discovered. They were 120 years old. The Apatosaurus eggs were 10 feet long.

Seismosaurus Time Period By: Katherine Brigham and Ethan Smith Seismosaurus lived during the late Jurassic period, about 156-145 million years ago.Jurassic period

Seismosaurus Appearance By: Ethan Smith The Seismosaurus measured about 130 to 170 feet tall and was almost 120 feet long. It weighed 100 tons. It is one of the longest land animals ever to be found. The Seismosaurus had a bulky body and a long neck. It had a tiny brain and its nostrils were at the top of its head. It had a tiny mouth with a set of rake-like teeth.

Seismosaurus Behavior By: Ethan Smith The Seismosaurus hatched from eggs. It walked on four legs and traveled in hordes. It was a member of the Sauropod family which lived for about 100 years. The Seismosaurus ate only plants and had to eat a lot of plants each day. It ate conifers, evergreen trees and other plants. The Seismosaurus may have used a whip like tail for protection.

Seismosaurus Environment By: Katherine Brigham The Seismosaurus lived in the woodlands of southern North America and was found in New Mexico in the United States. Seismosaurus lived in swamps, by some forests. And on the plains. They also lived near a cliff. When it was alive there were many shallow seas. The climate was very warm with mild weather. There were probably warm wet summers but not any cold winters. There were many earthquakes and volcanoes during the time of the Seismosaurus. This caused the ground to move.

Seismosaurus Interesting Facts By: Katherine Brigham Seismosaurus was probably a kind of Diplodacus. Seismosaurus was a sauropod. In Greek sauropod means “lizard footed”. Seismosaurus means “earth shaking lizard.” It was so big it shook the ground when he walked. Seismosaurus was a large herbivore dinosaur which means it survived on plants. Seismosaurus swallowed its food without chewing and then used round stones to help grind up its food. Seismosaurus was an unbelievably large animal because of this it could not get into the forests so it had a really long neck to reach the leaves on tall trees.

Stegosaurus Time Period By: Ian McArthur and Mabel Schlenker Stegosaurus lived during the late Jurassic period, about 156-140 million years ago.Jurassic period

Stegosaurus Appearance By: Mabel Schlenker The Stegosaurus was about 12 feet high and weighed about 2 tons or 6,500 pounds. The Stegosaurus’ length was about 30 feet long and its size was about the size of a city bus. The Stegosaurus had four thick legs and a hard back. It had 17 plates on its back. The plates on its back were lined in two rows. There were veins in the plates. The plates were also called spines. When the Stegosaurus laid down, the plates on his back bent back. The biggest plate scientist found was 2.5 feet long. The Stegosaurus had spikes on his tail that were four feet long. It either had eight spikes or four spikes depending on the kind of Stegosaurus.

Stegosaurus Behavior By: Mabel Schlenker The Stegosaurus ate only plants with its toothless beak. The Stegosaurus was the slowest dinosaur. It was not smart at all. When an enemy came to attack the Stegosaurus looked bigger than it really was and often scared them away. The Stegosaurus fought using its spiked tail and the plates on its back. It slashed its tail at the other dinosaurs’ necks and poked them with its plates.

Stegosaurus Environment By: Ian McArthur The Stegosaurus was found in Canada, Utah, Wyoming, Europe, Africa, England and China.

Stegosaurus Interesting Facts By: Ian McArthur The Stegosaurus was named in 1977 by Othniel Marsh. The Stegosaurus is the largest plated dinosaur known. It is called the “plated lizard” which means armored lizard. The Stegosaurus is also called a “roofed lizard”. The Stegosaurus stumped scientists for many years. Scientist have found many fossils of the Stegosaurus. The Stegosaurus is the best known dinosaur. The Stegosaurus had a brain the size of a walnut. Some people once believed that he had another brain in it’s tail.

Dinosaurs of the … 144-65 million years ago

Ankylosaurus Time Period By: Lina-Grace Assaad and Braxton Russell The Ankylosaurus lived during the late Cretaceous period, about 70-65 million years ago.Cretaceous period

Ankylosaurus Appearance By Lina-Grace Assaad The Ankylosaurus could be 33 feet in length. It weighed 4-5 tons. Its body was covered with bony scales and spikes. It had an unplated underbelly. The heavy club at the end of the tail was made of two bones. The Ankylosaurus had about 150 very small teeth. It had a small brain but it was the smartest dinosaur.

Ankylosaurus Behavior By Braxton Russell The Ankylosaurus was a two-legged dinosaur. It was very slow. The Ankylosaurus was a plant eater. The Ankylosaurus could violently swing its tail. A blow from the tail could seriously injury another dinosaur.

Ankylosaurus Environment By Lina-Grace Assaad The environment where the Ankylosaurus lived was found in the western United States and Canada. There were a lot of plants when they were alive. It was very hot and dry.

Ankylosaurus Interesting Facts By Braxton Russell The Ankylosaurus was named in 1908. The nickname for this dinosaur was “armored dinosaur”. That means it was a dinosaur with armor. The first bones of the Ankylosaurus were found in Montana in 1908. Ankylosaurus tracks were found in 1996. We know very little about this dinosaur.

Maiasaura Time Period By: Nicholas Chevalier and Alejandra Luevano The Maiasaura lived during the late Cretaceous period, about 80-65 million years ago. Cretaceous period

Maiasaura Appearance By Alejandra Luevano The Maiasaura was 15 feet tall and 30 feet in length. They were almost four times as long as a lioness. It weighed four tons. The Maiasaura had a bulky body with colorful skin. They had hind legs much bigger than their front legs with hoof- like claws on their feet. They had poor joints in their legs. The Maiasaura had a long stiff tail. The Maiasaura had a flat head with a flat skull. They also had a little crest in front of its big eyes which were located on the side of the head. It was a duck billed dinosaur. They had a wide, flat, toothless bill with hundreds of grinding side teeth.

Maiasaura Behavior By Nicholas Chevalier Maiasaura dinosaurs lived in large herds that may have consisted of 10,000 other Maiasaura. Maiasaura laid its eggs with hard waterproof shells. This protected its young and let them hatch safely. When the Maiasaura babies hatched, the mother would nurture and stay with the babies for a long time. Maiasaura fossils were found beside its young. This might have meant it always protected its young. They were herbivores and would eat trees and grasses to get food for themselves. Scientists believe that Maiasaura was also a swimmer, not just a land walker.

Maiasaura Environment By Nicholas Chevalier The Maiasaura dinosaur lived in parts of North America. Its habitat was in coastal places. A nesting group of Maiasaura lived by a river almost 8,000,000 years ago in what is today called Montana. Many of them were also found in the western part of the United States and Canada.

Maiasaura Interesting Facts By Alejandra Luevano Fossils of the Maiasaura were found in North America. There were discovered in 1978. Dr. Horner named the duck-billed dinosaur Maiasaura the good mother lizard. They were in a group called Ornithopoda, they also belonged to the Hadrosaurus and their family was Hadrosauride. They died on egg mountain. Scientist think maybe a volcano erupted or a mud slide happened.

Triceratops Time Period By: Ritvik Kammend and Audrey Nunes Triceratops lived during the late Cretaceous period, about 72-65 million years ago.Cretaceous period

Triceratops Appearance By: Audrey Nunes Triceratops hatched from eggs and had a short bulky body. It weighed 6 tons and was 30 feet long. It had a huge head with three long sharp horns above the eyes. It used them to fight. It had a shorter horn on it nose. The Trieratops had an extension on the back of its skull made of solid bone. This short solid bone was called a frill. The frill is the ruffled, hard shield at the base of the head. Triceratops had a big beak at the front of its mouth. The parrot-like beak had many teeth and powerful jaws. The Triceratops’ teeth hooked together in rows called batteries. On each foot there were five toes. Each claw was like a horse’s hoof. The baby Triceratops had a short nose horn and a box like frill with scalloped edges. The horns of a baby Ticeratops were straight tabs above the eyes.

Triceratops Behavior By: Ritvik Kammend The Triceratops was probably a herding animal like the other Ceratopcians. Triceratops walked on four legs so it could run fast. When it was threatened by predators, the Triceratops probably charged into its enemy like the modern day rhinoceros. The Triceratops ate cycade with its horned beak.

Triceratops Environment By: Ritvik Kammend The Triceratops lived when the weather was warm and pleasant. It roamed the plains of North America in herds. At the very end of the age of the dinosaurs. Triceratop’s fossils have been found in the United States in North America.

Triceratops Interesting Facts By: Audrey Nunes Triceratops is probably one of the most famous dinosaurs ever found. Triceratops was one of the largest and heaviest dinosaurs. The Triceratop could not fly. The first Triceratop’s skull was found in 1888 by John Bell Hatcher. It got its name in 1889. Triceratops means “Three-horned face”. The T-rex probably ate dinosaurs like Triceratops. Triceratops was one of the last dinosaurs to live. It was possibly the last species to exist.
