1 Lesson Plan - APP Nets, Surface Area and Volume Mental and Oral Starter Pupils to update the ‘Heard the Word’ grid that they completed at the start of the module. Main Show the pupils the assessment criteria (slide 9) and ask them to reflect on what they have done over the last few lessons. This will give pupils an idea about which challenge they should try to complete. Ask pupils to select an appropriate challenge. Explain that the purpose of this lesson is to assess their understanding so although they can ask a friend for help they must be honest when they come to self assess at the end of the lesson. Explain that if they find their chosen challenge either too hard or too easy they should swap for a different challenge. Ensure that pupils are aware that they only have this lesson to complete their chosen challenge so they must stay on task and work to the best of their ability to be able to accurately assess themselves. Plenary Print off slides 9 and 10 two to a page on coloured paper. Ask pupils to look at their assessment sheet and colour in all the levels they feel that can achieve independently. Tell pupils that they must complete the ‘Tips / Hints’ box by explaining in their own words the maths they did today. Ask them to also describe any help that they had. Explain to pupils that you will be marking their work and completing the ‘my teacher’s’ boxes. Remind students that next lesson for the starter activity they must come in and look for the question you have set and respond either by answering it or by explaining why the question is too hard for them to answer. 2 Probing Questions Level 4 Make 3-D models by linking given faces or edges and draw common 2-D shapes in different orientations on grids When presented with a net:  Which edge will meet this edge?  Which vertices will meet this one? What can you tell me about a 3-D shape from its 2-D net? How would you plot a rectangle that has no horizontal sides on a square grid? How would you convince me that the shape is a rectangle? Level 6 Visualise and use 2-D representations of 3-D objects Starting from a 2-D representation of a 3-D shape:  How many faces will the 3-D shape have? How do you know?  What will be opposite this face in the 3-D shape? How do you know?  Which side will this side join to make an edge? How do you know?  How would you go about drawing the plan and elevation for the 3-D shape you could make from this net? Level 7 Calculate lengths, areas and volumes in plane shapes and right prisms Talk me through the steps you took when finding the surface area of this right prism. If you know the height and volume of a right prism, what else do you know? What don’t you know? How many different square-based right prisms have a height of 10 cm and a volume of 160 cm 3 ? Why? What do you need to know to be able the find both the volume and surface area of a cylinder?

5 Starter Activity How many vertices, edges and faces? Can you name any of these solids?

6 Level 3 Task Ask your teacher for the net and the 3D solid. Match each net to its solid. Are there any that you can name?

7 Make one perfect die. (that’s a dice) Level 4 What will you use? – square paper for the net, stuck onto card and cut out. Don’t forget the tabs. Put on your spots (the dots on the opposite faces of the die should add to make 7.) Build your die. Level 5 Design and draw the net for a different shaped dice and name the solid.
