4. 4 Basic Positions Taught About the Sabbath
The true position taught in the Bible that the Sabbath was abolished at the cross and Christians have worshipped since the cross, on the first day (Sunday). The false position taught by Sabbatarians that Saturday is the day Christians worship. The false position taught by the Catholic Church that the Pope changed the day Christians worship from Saturday to Sunday. The false position taught by most Protestant churches that Sunday is the Christian Sabbath.

5. Let us notice>> In the Beginning
We want to start with Genesis 2:1-3. .
Those who believe we are to keep the Sabbath today begin at the very book of beginning to say that we must.

6. "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.  And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.   And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made."    (Genesis 2:1-3)

7. Note what the text says:
1. The Lord Rested on the 7th Day.
2. God blessed and sanctified the  7th      day.  
3. He consecrated it as holy.  
The word rested in this passage is ‘shabath.’  God ended His work and He rested.

8. What the text DOES NOT SAY..
1.  Man is to keep this Day! Not Called Sabbath here…
The 1st mention of the 7th day being
Called the Sabbath Day is found in
Ex. 16:23 Circle it in your Bible!

9. 1st Mentioned in Bible
23 And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

10.  The Scriptures do NOT tell us that Adam and Eve were instructed to rest on the 7th day.  
Noah is not instructed to keep the Sabbath Day as a holy      day.
  Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph are not instructed to observe a Sabbath, nor do we read where any of these people were at any time keeping the Sabbath day as a holy day

11. This point is important
We have to look to another period of time in Bible history to learn God’s instructions given regarding the Sabbath and it’s keeping.
 We must respect God’s Silence on this subject.

12. The command to Keep the Sabbath was made known unto the children of Israel
Nehemiah 9:12-14 “made known unto them Thy Holy Sabbath”  We learn here that the Sabbath was made known unto the  children of Israel.
 1. Not to Abraham,
2. Not to Isaac Jacob
3. Not to Adam & Eve.

13. In Exodus 16:2-16
Moses tells the Israelites that tomorrow is a “Holy Sabbath unto the Lord”
 Six days they could gather manna and on the sixth day they were to gather two portions one to be eaten on the Sabbath a day when no manna would be given by God.

15. Who is God speaking to regarding the keeping of the Sabbath?

16. Ex.31:12-18 Verse 13 “children of Israel” Verse 13 “you shall keep”
Verse 14   “sign between me and You”  (the children of Israel)
Verse 14 “throughout your generations”
Verse 14  “You may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you”

17. Exodus 31:12-18 Verse 15 “you shall keep the sabbath therefore”
Verse 16  “Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath”
Verse 16  “throughout their generations”
Verse 16  “for a never ending covenant”
Verse 17  “a sign between me and the children of Israel forever.”

18. Clearly this passage teaches God’s revealed will for the children of Israel to keep the Sabbath Day holy.

19. Neh. 9:13-14
13 Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:

20. Neh. 9:14
14 And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:

21. If God made known the Sabbath on Mount Sinai when He gave the Law through Moses, He did not make it known to Adam and Eve,
Cain and Abel,
or anyone else prior to the giving of the Mosaic law.

22. Punishment for working on the Sabbath
Num. 15:32 A man gathered sticks (worked) on the Sabbath Day…
God had told them specifically…No
Work on the Sabbath Day!
Moses inquired of God what was to be done to the man . Hear God “The man shall be surely put to death:all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. V.35.
They did! He died!

23. Old Law Done Away With -New Law Is Now in Effect
Ephesians 2:13-16 “having abolished in His flesh the enmity even the law of commands contained in ordinances . . .”
Romans 7:1-11 “discharged  from the law”
What law is under consideration? “

24. Thou shalt not covet” (verse 7)
“oldness of the letter” (verse 6)    
Colossians 2:13-17  “nailing it to His cross”
Hebrews 8:3-7 “for if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second” (7)
Hebrews 9:13-18  “new testament” (15)

25. We live under the New Testament today.
We live under the Testament of Christ and not under the first law given to the children of Israel.

26. Not One Word is spoken in N.T. for Christians to keep the Sabbath!
 What we do learn however is that the early Christians were meeting on the “first day of the week,” Acts 20:7
The disciples (followers of Christ) came together (assembled) to break bread, to partake  of the Lord’s Supper.  

27. The fact that the Christians were meeting on the first day of the week for worship is also strengthened by Paul’s command to the Corinthian church to lay by in store upon the first day of the week.
I Corinthians 16:1-5  One can only conclude that the disciples were meeting on the first day of every week to break bread and to lay by in store.

28. Where in the law of Christ (the new testament) are we commanded to observe the Sabbath and keep it holy?  
No where!

29. The Jews, Israelites were to “remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy..”
