It’s roots are in the sport of rugby. Various rugby rules combined in America to form the modern-day version of the game.

In 1905 18 players had been killed, 159 seriously injured. There were calls to outlaw the game in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt intervened and demanded a rule change. The forward pass was introduced in 1906.

Several college coaches helped to develop the modern-day game into what it is today. They helped utilize the newly-introduced forward pass.

Roots back to 1892 with a paid game. The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. This league changed its name two years later to the National Football League. (NFL)

1960-1969 It was a competitor with the NFL until it merged in 1969.

January 15, 1967 NFL vs. AFL These were bitter rivals. There was immense pressure to win.

Created after the merger of the NFL and the AFL. It divided the NFL into two conferences. These two conferences would eventually play each other for the championship. The Super Bowl
