5 Romeo & Juliet Facts Setting: Verona, Italy Total death count: 6 The play is inspired by Arthur Brooke’s poem “The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet”, written in 1562. This was very common. First published in the mid 1590’s Due to Elizabethan law, Juliet (and all other female roles) would have been played by young men in the original production at the Globe Theatre. Romeo and Juliet is argued to be Shakespeare’s first play about romantic love. Romeo and Juliet, alongside Hamlet, is probably Shakespeare’s most performed play and has also been adapted in many forms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tragical_History _of_Romeus_and_Juliet#mediaviewer/File:Arth ur_Brooke_Tragicall_His.jpg
