5 Endorsements An endorsement is a statement appearing on a license that identifies the specific subjects (at various grade levels) that the license holder is authorized to teach All will be endorsed in Elementary Education: Self-Contained General Education (k-9)

6 Endorsements (continued) Requirements are listed in our website Middle grade endorsements (grades 5-8) –Content specific (there is no “generic” middle grade endorsement) –Typically 18 hours in subject Exceptions: Math/English as a Second Language/Bilingual education –Recommend at least two endorsements –State needs: math, science, foreign language, ESL, bilingual

7 Endorsements (continued) All middle grade endorsements require Middle Grade Coursework CI 410, EPS 427, EPSY 430 (if from this campus) Online through UI (Summers) Other institutions (link on CoTE website) Most students take between junior/senior year Do not delay taking these courses as middle grade endorsements may not always be available.

8 Endorsements (continued) Social Science requirements met (If MG courses are taken) Close in General Science (14-18) –Most physical and life science courses count Close in Language Arts (13-20) –English, Journalism, Speech, Creative Writing, BTW, CWL –Courses outside of these areas should check with Council Area of Concentration gives you a start (if not finish requirements) May use Gen Ed courses if they apply

9 Endorsements (continued) Foreign language –5-8: 18 hours of coursework Recommend you take/pass the content test even though it isn’t required as that would make you “highly qualified” –K-4: 24 hours of coursework and pass test –9 th grade: 24 hours of coursework and pass test

10 Testing Admission based partially on your passing Basic Skills test (now called the Test of Academic Proficiency) If you are using the ACT/SAT in place of the Basic Skills test, be sure to create an ISBE account AND request ACT OR SAT send your test scores directly to ISBE Directions for this are on the COTE website (via a link from the main page) If you do not do this, you will eventually be thrown out of the program

11 Testing (continued) No additional licensure tests taken first year of program Elementary/Middle Grade (110) –Must take/pass prior to student teaching (state law) Assessment of Professional Teaching: Grades K-9 or Pre K-12 (either is acceptable) –Generally taken during student teaching but may take on the same day as content test.

12 ISBE Rules –No professional education or content course with a grade lower than a ‘C’ may be used toward licensure, endorsement, or approval –Cannot use Credit/No Credit, Pass/Fail, or Proficiency Credit toward licensure, approvals, or endorsements –Advance Placement credit MAY, however, be used
