Guide to Wireless Printing AARP Tax-Aide Sonoma County Bill Dornbush, TC

Daily startup Insert and/or enable wireless adaptor Connect to the wireless network Check default printer for Windows is set to the site printer Check default printer for TaxAide is set to the site printer Print a test page If you only use your laptop for TaxAide, your settings should not change from session to session. Otherwise, CHECK EVERY TIME.

Insert wireless adaptor card Insert card in BOTTOM slot on side of laptop (5) – push it in all the way. See the lights! Some adaptors look like USB Drives

Enable internal wireless adaptor Some PCs have a switch, others have a keyboard setting It may look like this: Be sure that you have an indication (like blue light or sys tray icon)

Connect to wireless network If your wireless adaptor is installed properly, you will see this in your system tray : Be sure you are connected to a network –Position your mouse pointer over the icon. You will see a message like “Wireless network connection (taxaide), status connected” Be sure you are connected to the right network, like “taxaide”

Set default Windows printer Start > (Settings >) Printers Right-click on the site printer, select “Set as default printer.” Look for the “check”

Set default TaxWise printer Start TaxWise File > Printer Setup In the upper right of the window, 2. Select a default printer for Tax Returns, Reports, Set to the site printer

Print a test page In TaxWise: File > Print > Print Blank Forms Select a form, click Add, click Print Check that the site printer is selected, then click Print.

What if it doesn’t print? Did you change any software on your laptop? A new version of your firewall or security software, for example. –Try disabling your firewall and try again Try printing from another application to Windows –If you can print from another application, check the TaxWise setup

Network Router Check the site router (box or laptop) Make sure that Status and WLAN lights are blinking (if this site has a router based network). If this site uses one laptop as the router, check its status (Quetec > Manager > Tools > Status)

Network Security Check that your wireless security is set properly (how to do this varies by type of laptop and network adaptor, usually right- click on Wireless Network Icon in System Tray and select Status > Properties.) –SSID: taxaide –Network authentication: Open –Data encryption: WEP –Network key: taxaidetaxaid

What else? Laptop hosting shared printer – Make sure it is on the network. When you position the mouse pointer over the Wireless Network Connection icon in the system tray (lower right of the computer screen), you will see a message like “Wireless Network Connection (taxaide), status connected.” If the laptop hosting the shared printer has Firewall software, confirm that the firewall allows access to the shared printer. To see the firewall settings, use: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Security Center

If all else fails… Turn off all devices Power up in sequence: –Router –Laptop hosting printer –Printer –Your laptop Ask for help – Site Coordinator, who will involve Technology Coordinator

WEP Discussion WEP concern: Breaking 104 bit WEP in less than 60 seconds Erik Tews, Ralf-Philipp Weinmann, and Andrei Pyshkin Technische Universit¨at Darmstadt, Abstract. We demonstrate an active attack on the WEP protocol that is able to recover a 104-bit WEP key using less than 40.000 frames with a success probability of 50%. In order to succeed in 95% of all cases, 85.000 packets are needed. The IV of these packets can be randomly chosen. This is an improvement in the number of required frames by more than an order of magnitude over the best known key-recovery attacks for WEP. On a IEEE 802.11g network, the number of frames required can be obtained by re-injection in less than a minute. The required computational effort is approximately 220 RC4 key setups, which on current desktop and laptop CPUs is neglegible.
