Learning Objectives In this session, Mathematicians will: O Learn about geometric symmetry O Explore rotation and line or reflection symmetry O Analyze symmetry of various real-life objects
3
ENGAGE – What is symmetry? O On your geoboards, create a shape with exactly two lines of symmetry O Modification- On geoboard, create a shape with at least one line of symmetry. THINK/PAIR/SHARE: Explain to a partner where the line of symmetry is and how you know that this is a line of symmetry. Are there any other lines of symmetry in the pattern that you have just created?
4
Math Task In your Math Journal, draw your shape on the math grid *Remember that it must meet all of the criteria on your instruction sheet O Drawn neatly with a ruler (1pt) O Identification of parallel or perpendicular lines O If none required, state so (1 pt) O Lines of symmetry correctly drawn O If none required, state so (1 pt) O Summary of task (2 pts) Today, I learned that … You will receive an instruction card.instruction card Create a shape which meets the criteria listed on the card: You can use the Geoboard to work with your partner through the problem. Begin working in pairs. Each student must complete their own math journal
5
Reflect & Connect Pair/Pair/Share Turn to another pair and discuss your solution. Two pairs will be asked to share with the class.
6
ENGAGE – What is symmetry? Karen says that this shape has symmetry. Is she correct, why or why not? THINK/PAIR/SHARE: Debate your answer with a partner. Explain why or why not Karen is correct.

If yes, draw them and state how many lines of symmetry. ________________________________________ Does your object have rotational symmetry?
