1 Do You Know Your Government? Every U.S. Citizen should know his representatives, the function of their office, and their views on most issues.

2 Federal Representatives These are your representatives that go to Washington D.C. and work on issues for the entire country.

3 U.S. President Barack Obama (D) Executive Branch The President is the Head of State, Head Executive, and Commander in Chief of the American Military. The President has the power to veto law and can be impeached and removed by Congress. The President is not directly elected by the people. He is elected through the Electoral College www.whitehouse.gov

4 Vice President Joe Biden (D) Executive Branch The V.P. ‘s main function is to assume the office of the Presidency if the President dies or is unable to perform his duties. The V.P. is also the Presiding Officer of the Senate and has the tie breaker vote if the Senate is deadlocked. www.whitehouse.gov

5 Secretary of State Hillary Clinton The Secretary of State is the main foreign policy advisor to the President. They negotiate treaties and agreements with other countries. They also recommend appointments for U.S. ambassadors around the world. Executive Branch www.whitehouse.gov

6 Secretary of Treasury, Tim Geithner The Treasury Secretary is the top Economic advisor to the President. The Treasurer formulates Economic and Tax Policy in the United States. 7 The House Speaker John Boehner (R) The Speaker is elected by the entire House of Representatives and is second in line to the Presidency. The Speaker is the official leader of the House and establishes policy, negotiations, and budgets Legislative Branch www.house.gov

8 House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor (R) Majority Leader is head of the political party that has the most seats in the House. The leader schedules legislation for Floor Consideration and sets the House agenda. Legislative Branch www.house.gov

9 Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader (D) The Minority Leader is the head of the “loyal opposition” in the House. Legislative Branch www.house.gov

10 Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D ) The Majority Leader sets the agenda for the Senate. They also schedule debates and votes on the Floor. Legislative Branch www.senate.gov

11 Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConell (R) Legislative Branch Senate Minority leader is the head of “loyal opposition” in the Senate. They rally their caucus and is the spokesperson for the minority parties’ policy views. www.senate.gov
