Sun-time Until the 1860s most places in the world lived and worked on their own “Sun Time” which meant that everyone used sunrise and sunset as the time of day. Fact #1

Fact #8 When is “today” not “today”? An imaginary line on the Earth's surface, 180° from Greenwich. As the Earth rotates, each day first begins and ends on the line. A traveler going east over the line sets their calendar back one day, and going west adds on day.

Fact #11 Universal Time The world is divided up into about 24 time zones. Standard time within most time zones is an integral number of hours offset from a time scale called Coordinated Universal Time (abbreviated UTC), maintained by a large number of very precise “atomic clocks” at laboratories around the world, including the U.S. Naval Observatory.
