COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE SM August 2011

COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE SM Scholarly communication takes many forms, the diversity of these forms ever increasing within that vast resource we know as “the web”. However, whether the physical medium is print or electronic, primary authoritative dissemination of written scholarly works is still driven by conference proceedings, journals, and books.

COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE While books are not often associated with “timely” dissemination of information, scholarly books typically provide an overall comprehensive analysis of a topic. Thorough background information, historical context, and discussion of related topics are all characteristics of the scholarly book. Simply put, books commonly provide a broader, deeper, more-well rounded treatment of a topic than journals and other forms of scholarly communication. For this reason books will continue to hold an extremely important place within the immense, diverse universe that is scholarly literature.

COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE While we recognize the importance of books as intellectual resources, they are in turn important to the career ambitions of academicians. In many fields of study the publication of a book is viewed as essential for promotion and tenure, particularly in the humanities. Scholarly books, in more ways than one, are integral to the world of higher learning.

COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE As we see with journal articles, the influence of individual scholarly books may vary dramatically. However, we are all familiar with landmark works of research and scholarship that have been produced in book form. Examples over the course of the past century span a range of disciplines – History, Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Physics, Education… These works are highly cited within journal and conference proceedings literature.

COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE Cited by over 3,300 articles within Web of Science, the English version alone. Cited by over 2,300 articles within Web of Science Cited by over 4, 700 articles within Web of Science

COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE http://wokinfo.com/products_tools/multidisciplinary/bookcitationindex/ As with everything Thomson Reuters does with content, quality is extremely important. All books will be reviewed by our Editorial staff.

COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE Science and Social Science and Humanities -- coverage includes publications back to 2005 Content will be comprised of scholarly books, both electronic and print, that present fully referenced articles of original research, or reviews of the literature. o Both multi-authored and single-authored o Series and non-series o Encyclopedias, Reference Books generally not included, though graduate level texts may be considered. Full indexing of Books and individually-authored Book Chapters. o Capture of all fundamental bibliographic information as well as author cited references. The Book Citation Index, within Web of Science

COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PICTURE: ADDING BOOKS TO WEB OF SCIENCE Commercial, Society, University press participation -- Our Acquisitions efforts are still in full stride and have been under way for some time. We first approached Commercial publishers, such as Wiley-Blackwell and Springer, given the sheer volume of material which they produce along with our solid, longstanding relationships with this group. Society and University presses followed, and these groups are particularly important to our Social Science and Arts & Humanities coverage. Links to full text from the Book Citation Index is a priority as well, as it is for all Web of Science content. We will of course employ primary mechanisms such as the DOI and OpenUrl. Links from OPAC systems as well. We are also in conversations with e-book aggregators to establish direct links to collections.
