2. Mood MOOD is the overall feelings or emotions that are created in the reader. The “power of the pen” can move mountains… Authors “move” their readers’ moods through their choice of words and level of detail. (Imagery)

3. Example of Mood “Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold ; and so by degrees—very gradually– I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” What mood is created here? Intense / vengeful / threatening

5. Tone Tone is the author’s attitude toward the subject and/or the reader. You can recognize the tone by the word choices the author uses. The language will reveal their opinion, whether it is positive/negative, about the subject. Tone must be inferred by what is said and by what is not.

6. Tone “Watch your tone!” The literary term Tone concerns itself with the way in which something is said/written. As readers what do we look at to determine HOW an author/character is saying something? –Word choice –Sentence Length (long? Short? I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now ” What do you think the tone of this song is? What is B.O.B singing about and how does he feel about it? Hopeful – Desperate – “wish” is repeated– “Now” indicates a sense of urgency. “Pretend” is an escape of reality.

10. Examples of Tone… What is the tone of our Narrator? “True! – Nervous—very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?” “Now this is the point. You fancy me mad.” “If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body.”

11. TONE AND MOOD – Working together Tone totally effects the mood of the story. Think about it. How someone says something has a cause and effect relationship to how someone reacts.
