HURRICANE RINA FORECAST A contingent of 82,000 tourists visiting Cancun, Cozumel, and the Maya Riviera and other locales via cruise liners and other modes of travel are at risk. Many are beginning to evacuate these areas, some of which were damaged by Wilma.

HURRICANE RINA FORECAST Hurricane Rina is forecast to make landfall on Thursday, October 27 th. Rina could make a sharp turn to the east and move towards Cuba and Florida, as Hurricane Wilma did in 2005.

HURRICANE WILMA: FLORIDA Wilma, Florida’s eighth hurricane in 15 months, came ashore at 6:30 a.m. ET on October 24 th near Cape Romano, 22 miles south of Naples. FL.

HURRICANE WILMA: FLORIDA After landfall, Wilma raced through Florida at about 32 km/hr (20 mi/hr). In the process, Wilma spawned FIVE tornadoes and dropped 25 cm (10 in) of rain.

HURRICANE WILMA: EARLY LOSS ESTIMATE Risk Management Solutions estimated that insurance companies would have claims in the range of $6 billion to $10 billion for damage in Florida.

HURRICANE WILMA: LOSS ESTIMATE RMS’ estimate was based on onshore damage resulting from wind, a coastal storm surge, business interruption, and increased costs for materials and services needed for repairs.

First, as the storm crossed the Gulf towards the State of Florida it pushed water across the keys from south to north. Second, after the storm made landfall, it pushed the same water back to the sea.

HURRICANE WILMA: IMPACTS IN FLORIDA 6 million homes and businesses lost power. The death toll in Flordia from Wilma was low-- 25 people. Insured economic losses in Florida was high-- $10 billion.

HURRICANE WILMA: LOSS TO INDUSTRY IN FLORIDA A portion of the total economic loss in Florida was sustained by Florida’s 9.1 billion dollar citrus and sugar industries.
