Good morning. My name is Nancy Tuchman, I am and Ecologists and the Director of the institute of Environmental Sustainability at Loyola University Chicago. My colleague, Dr. Michael Schuck is an ethicist at Loyola University Chicago and together we are co-Directing the IJEP;HE. HE is an electronic environmental science textbook that is integrated with an ethics and spirituality lens. It is targeted for students that are entering university level or in their final year of high school – we also hope it will be used in parishes and refugee camps with adult learners.

4. United Nations Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Report
The UN’s MEA report informed the main environmental issues that we cover in the HE chapters. The MEA was conducted by hundreds of scientists, economists, and social scientists around the world, and it elucidates the major threats to the planets.

Environmental threats to the planet are caused by human activities. These human activities in turn have a negative feedback on human health and well being, particularly acute impacts on the poor and the marginalized. In Healing Earth, we cross-reference between chapters to elucidate the interconnectivity of natural systems, and the ethics section of each chapter integrates the human dimension and suffering with the science.
