IN OCTOBER 12th we celebrate: “Virgen del Pilar” Day. Special day for the Spanish Army. “Columbus Day” or “Día de la Hispanidad”. This day is celebrated in América. WHY?

Christopher Columbus was born in Genova, Italy, in 1451. Genova was Spanish in that time. So, Columbus was Spanish. He was a very good sailor. He loved reading books and he was a clever man.

Columbus wanted to discover an easier route to the East (China) and make business.

He read Copernicus books, an astronomer. He said that the Earth was round and a planet moving around the SUN. Hello children!

In those times, people thought the Earth was as plane as a table. When a ship travelled too far away, it fell down, down into an abism.

But Christopher Columbus knew the truth. Travelling to the West, he could arrive at the East (China).

So, he asked money to the king of Portugal. The king of Portugal answered: NO! YOU ARE CRAZY!. THE EARTH IS NOT A BALL!

Then he went to ask help to the King and Queen of SPAIN. They said: SPAIN IS POOR.

WE HAVE JUST CONQUERED GRANADA.

BUT, I LIKE YOUR IDEA! I WILL SELL ALL MY JEWLERY TO BUY SHIPS AND MEN FOR YOU!.

With the money from King Fernando and Queen Isabel of SPAIN, Christopher Columbus bought three ships.

The first one he named LA PINTA.

The Second one: LA NIÑA.

The Third one: LA SANTA MARÍA.

August 3rd of 1492, he departured from PALOS DE LA FRONTERA, HUELVA, SPAIN.

In October 12th, Christopher Columbus arrived to a New World. HE DISCOVERED AMERICA.

Since then each OCTOBER 12th, we celebrate: COLUMBUS DAY OR DÍA DE LA HISPANIDAD. And we don’t go to school. THE END.
