Instructions This part of the course is a PowerPoint demonstration intended to give a guided tour of using publishers’ resources. This part of the module is off-line and is intended as an information resource for reference use. This part of the module should be taken before using the live tutorial on the HINARI & publishers’ websites and does not require a HINARI training password. MODULE 3 Publishers’ Resources

Logging on to HINARI 1 Before logging onto Publishers’ resources we can Login to the HINARI website using the URL http://www.who.int/hinari

Logging on to HINARI 2 We will need to insert our HINARI User ID and Password in the Login box and click on the “Sign On” button.

Logging on to HINARI 3 Logging into HINARI will provide authentication when we visit a publisher resource.

Choosing a partner publishing service 1 Choose a Partner publishers’ resource from the dropdown list on the HINARI home page.

Choosing a partner publishing service 2 When we open a publishers’ resource a new window will open. We should now be authenticated at the new site.

Blackwell Synergy Home page Welcome to the Blackwell Synergy Home page. From here we can locate articles or journal titles, register for a personal profile, and order table of contents services.

Select a journal from the Blackwell collection 1 To select a journal from the Blackwell collection highlight a title in the dropdown list.

Select a journal from the Blackwell collection 2 Once selected click on “Go”.

Synergy – journal homepage We will now be on the journal homepage within the Blackwell website. From here we will see a list of issues we can access by date.

Synergy – issue level features From within an issue we can view summaries, abstracts, references and full text. For full text articles we can view in either HTML or Adobe PDF format From within a table of contents we can view other contents pages and/or sign up for FREE email table of contents alerts.

Synergy – HTML and PDF Full text in HTML format will look like a web page with links embedded to tables and references. You will also get an option to view/print in PDF format

Synergy – PDF articles Here is an article in PDF format. When we choose this option a new window will open with the article within. When we have printed the article we can close the extra window.

Synergy – Quick search From within a journal homepage we can search for keywords across the journal or all journals. In this example we will search for “MALARIA” within Tropical Medicine and International Health.

Synergy – search results Our search results are displayed showing the number of matches and the search criteria. Results can be ordered by relevancy or date.

Synergy – search within results In this example we have searched for the term “BEDNETS” within our Malaria results. This has refined the number of articles matching the search criteria. The search is now (MALARIA AND BEDNETS) in the journal Tropical Medicine and International Health

Synergy – a database of articles 1 Searching can be done across the publisher’s website. The website is also a database of articles. In Synergy there are over 400,000 full text articles.

Synergy – a database of articles 2 In this example we have searched for the term “SCHISTOSOMIASIS” across all journals.

Synergy – a database of articles 3 From our initial results we can now focus the search by adding the term “Epidemiology” in the Narrow your search box.

Synergy – a database of articles 4 We now have 163 articles across all journals with the search query “SCHISTOSOMIASIS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY” Full text access can be either HTML or PDF format.

Synergy – HTML article format Here is an article in HTML format. Search terms are highlighted in yellow.

Synergy – finding journals by subject Journals and articles can be found by subject category from the Synergy homepage.

Synergy – subscribed titles Journals in Synergy available to HINARI registered users have a GREEN circle next to the title.

Synergy – personalised services 1 Personalised services are available to us when we register on the website.

Synergy – personalised services 2 To register we must fill in a registration form. There is no charge for this service which includes email alerts, tables of contents, saved searches, and a customised homepage.

Synergy – personalised services 3 When the form is completed click on “Register”.

Table of contents alerts Table of contents alerts will contain links to full text articles. Many will arrive via email in advance of the printed journal being published.

Synergy – personal log-in 1 Once registered we can login to the website and click on My Synergy.

Synergy – personal log-in 2 From within My Synergy we can access saved searches and sign up for table of contents alerts. Registration details can be amended and other services accessed.

ScienceDirect 1 Each publishers’ site looks different but offers similar services. This is the homepage of Elsevier’s ScienceDirect website. From here we can access the A-Z Journals list, search the database, and set up alerts.

ScienceDirect 2 ScienceDirect allows us to search across journals within the Elsevier collection. In this example we can see the A-Z list and search box containing the search term “TUBERCULOSIS”

ScienceDirect 3 Results are displayed with the search term highlighted in red within the results. Searches can be narrowed further by adding extra terms.

Wiley InterScience 1 This is the Wiley Interscience website. The site contains a list of journals, search facility, and registered user login.

Wiley InterScience 2 The Wiley website also allows us to browse journals by subject or A-Z.
