Biology Discussion Notes Thursday 01/08/2015
2
Goals for the day 1.Be able to say the names of everyone in our class 2.Be able to define what haploid & diploid mean and know the numbers for humans 3.Be able to calculate haploid number given diploid number & vice versa 4.Know the haploid & diploid number for HUMANS
3
Question of the Day THUR 1/08 What is the goal of Meiosis? (You may use your reading sheet)
4
Meiosis is a process that reduces the amount of chromosomes in a cell to half the original amount Why would you want to reduce chromosomes by half?
5
Where do you get your chromosomes (DNA) from?
7
Human Egg and Sperm cells have 23 chromosomes in them. How many chromosomes are in human egg and sperm cells?
8
Haploid – a half set of chromosomes (only found in sex cells) Diploid – a full set of chromosomes (found in all body cells, except sex cells- Body Cells AKA somatic cells)
9
Gamete Skin Cell Egg Somatic Cell Sperm Sex Cell Haploid or Diploid?
10
How many chromosomes do humans have in their cells? How many chromosomes would be in a human diploid cell? How many chromosomes would be in a human haploid cell?
11
If a Dragon’s wing cell has 50 chromosomes in it then... 2n=_______ n=______
12
NAME GAME First Round: Say your own name when you get the ball – must throw it to someone who has not had it yet. Second Round: Say the name of the person you are throwing it to, if you don’t know a name, you should……

Species of the Day 1/8
