ICT systems
2
Learning Objectives We are learning about: –The specialist ICT equipment that can be used –The use of microprocessor technology in commercial applications –Mobile, portable and desktop ICT tools –The differences between the technologies used and also the uses of these technologies
3
ICT systems Using microprocessors in organizations 1 Microprocessors are used to control devices They make decisions on how the device should operate They operate actuators or turn devices on/off as well as make adjustments They are also used in mobile devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, etc.
4
ICT systems Using microprocessors in organizations 2 Used to control air conditioning systems For controlling industrial processes For access control
5
ICT systems Operating Systems and applications software Computer hardware needs the specialised software to tell it what to do. This is the operating system or applications software. In PC’s this may be Windows 7 of Device Drivers.
6
ICT systems Applications of technologies ICT systems have to use a technology that is appropriate for their use. For example: Portable Devices: Less powerful chips Light Small Screen Less Memory Long Battery life Trimmed down operating system
7
ICT systems Magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) These are the strange- looking characters on bank cheques Characters are written in magnetic ink, which can be read automatically Used by banks to read cheques at high speed Very accurate and hard to forge
8
ICT systems Optical mark recognition (OMR) Optical mark recognition: Works by shading in boxes on forms Forms are batched together Sent for reading by an optical mark reader Reports can be produced from the system
9
ICT systems Graphics tablet Used by designers Can use the tablet to draw freehand Some tablets have a series of shapes that can be chosen Can add units and appliances, etc., to a kitchen design
10
ICT systems Specialist output devices Specialist output devices include: A3 printers A0 plotters 3D printers
11
ICT systems A3 printers A3 paper is twice the size of A4 paper A3 printers are larger versions of the more familiar A4 printers Used for posters, plans, etc. Used for printing spreads for pages of books, magazines, etc.
12
ICT systems A0 plotters A0 paper is very large A0 plotters can print in black and white and colour Used for printing maps and plans Ideal for CAD work Used by architects
13
ICT systems 3D printers Can produce products in 3 dimensions Ideal for producing 3D prototypes of products Architects can quickly produce models of buildings based on their plans
14
ICT systems Computers and portable devices Laptops Netbooks Notebooks Palmtops Desktop computers Tablet Computers PDAs and Handhelds WAP Smart mobile phones Cloud computers
15
ICT systems Software Specialised software –Computer-aided design (CAD) –Kitchen design software –Payroll software –Stock control software –Expert Systems –Control Software
16
ICT systems Task 1 Download the worksheet from the intranet and have a go at the questions. Extension: Complete the Test yourself task on page 195 of the text book.
