13 Air Water Oil “The system approach” A good coalescing prefilter is necessary to remove bulk liquids and aerosols of oil and water at the inlet of the membrane dryer. Hydrocarbon (oil) molecules are much larger than water molecules, and will quickly plug the membrane pores, rendering it ineffective.

20 The partial pressure of water vapor is usually referred to as the vapor pressure. It is the pressure the water vapor would exert if it existed alone at the temperature and volume of the mixture. The process is simple- Saturated (wet) air has a higher partial vapor pressure than dry air. Water molecules migrate through the membrane from higher partial vapor pressure to lower partial vapor pressure.

This air then “sweeps” over the outer surface of the membrane, causing the water molecules (with higher partial vapor pressure) inside the system to migrate across the membrane. 26 MSD Membrane Dryers Coalescing Prefilters are a must with membrane dryers. Hydrocarbon (oil) molecules will rapidly plug the membrane pores, quickly rendering the membrane ineffective. Automatic mechanical drain removes liquid oil and water contaminants from the system.
