What is it? Expository writing is a type of writing that is meant to explain, inform, or describe. Present an idea with relevant evidence and then discuss the topic

Types Compare and Contrast Cause and Effect Problem Solution Extended Definition

Explains what a term means Some terms have definite, concrete meanings, such as glass, books, or trees. Terms such as honesty, honor, or love are abstract and depend more on a person’s point of view

Writing an Extended Definition 1. Tell readers what term is being defined 2. Present clear and basic information 3. Use facts, examples, or anecdotes that readers will understand It's a Metaphor

Choosing a Definition This is a key step to writing the essay You need to understand the term before you can define it to others Read the dictionary, but don’t just copy the definition Explain the term briefly in your own words Try to limit your term before you start defining it  Ex. Writing about “love” you could say “romantic love,” “platonic love,” or “first love”

Thesis Statement Identifies the term being defined and a brief basic definition  (term) (definition)  Ex. Platonic love is affection for another not based on attraction.  Ex. Assertiveness is standing up for one’s rights.

How to Write an Effective Definition Create a definition. There are several ways to define a term.  Define by function  Define by structure  Define by analysis  Define what it doesn’t mean

Define by Function Explain what something does or how it works Ex. What is the function of platonic love?  Platonic love creates peace. Ex. What is the function of assertiveness?  Assertiveness achieves results.

Define by Structure Tell how something is organized or put together. Ex. You can define a car by explaining the engine wheels, seats, etc. Some topics are not easily defined by structure Ex. How can you define platonic love or assertiveness into parts?

Define by Analysis Compare the term to other members of its class and then illustrate the differences The differences that are special characteristics that make it stand out Ex. Compare a Siberian husky to other dogs

Define by what it’s not This distinction can clarify a definition and help them better understand Ex. Platonic love is the opposite of hate Ex. Assertiveness is the opposite of submission
