1 PERIODIC TABLE GROUPS FAMILIAR FAMILIES OF THE PERIODIC TABLE

2 WHY IT MATTERS Atoms react with other atoms when their outer energy level is not filled. When the outer level is filled, they do not react with other atoms. Elements with 1, 2, and 7 valence electrons react the MOST They are the most willing to gain or lose electrons to form a stable atom. Each group of elements has similar reactivity. Why? Because they have the same number of valence electrons.

3 GROUP 1 – ALKALI METALS Have 1 valence electron VERY REACTIVE – they want to get rid of that 1 valence electron so they can be stable.

4 GROUP 2 – ALKALINE EARTH METALS Have 2 valence electrons KINDA REACTIVE – not as reactive as Group 1, but still want to get rid of their 2 electrons so they can be stable.

5 GROUPS 3-12 – TRANSITION METALS Don’t follow the “group” rule Not as reactive as Groups 1 and 2, but are willing to give up electrons to become stable.

6 GROUP 17 (7A)– HALOGENS VERY REACTIVE – They want to steal everyone’s electrons so they can have a full outer level. They just need one!

7 GROUP 18 (8A)– NOBLE GASES NOBLE because they are STABLE (or INERT) Don’t want to react with anyone because their outer energy level is FULL Found alone in nature
