5. Inspiration for Today’s Project Three Sunflowers One of Van Gogh’s favorite subjects was sunflowers This type of painting is called a still life

7. Supplies You Will Need… 12” X 18” white sulphite paper One yellow or any light colored oil pastel Liquid Tempera Paints: One tub of green (any shade), one tub of blue (any shade), palette of a variety of colors (yellow, red, orange, purples, etc)

8. STEP ONE: DRAWING THE FLOWERS HAVE STUDENTS WRITE THEIR NAME ON BACK OF PAPER

19. Painting the Flowers Set out two colors of paint on each table. The kids have a choice which color they want for their background and which color they want for their table.

20. Painting the Flowers After the background and table-top are painted, bring out a palette of tempera paints to begin painting flowers and stems.

21. STEP THREE:ADDING SHADING DETAILS

22. Shading Details When painting the vase, demonstrate how to add shade and light with the paints. Apply a color to the vase and then, while the paint is wet, dip brush in some white paint.

23. Shading Details Using a horizontal stroke, paint along one edge of the vase, blending colors as you go. On the other side of the vase, dip brush into a tiny bit of black paint.

24. Shading Details Brush edge of vase, blending the black with the vase color as you go.

25. Final Step Use black tempera paint and a thin brush. Trace over every single line, including every petal and vase line.
