Phases of the Moon
2
How do we see the moon? The moon is not a giant nightlight – there is no light that comes out of it – meaning that it does NOT EMIT light We are able to see the moon because it REFLECTS the light coming from the sun
3
The moon’s travels The moon revolves (or orbits) around the earth
To do one full revolution around earth takes approximately 28 days (around one month) This means that in 28 days you will see all of the phases of the moon from earth
4
Phases of the moon The moon does not change as it travels around earth. It looks like it has different phases (or shapes) in the sky from OUR POINT OF VIEW FROM EARTH If you were to look at the moon from up above it would always look the same. Half of the moon would always be lit up by the sun and the other half would be dark.
5
Perspective from up above
the moon always looks the same
6
Phases of the moon From earth, we see the moon change shapes throughout the month This is because as the moon revolves around the earth sunlight is hitting it and lighting up certain parts of the moon for us to see
7
Perspective from earth
The moon is lit up differently throughout the month so it looks like it changes shape
