Recent polls have shown that 1/5 of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Let’s see what she thinks

How Do We Make This Flat? A globe is the MOST accurate representation of the earth

Latitude – indicates how far north or south a place on that line is from the equator.
Longitude – how far a place is east or west from the Prime Meridian. The greatest longitude in either direction is 180*. Review Vocabulary Equator—latitude is 0* Prime Meridian—longitude is 0*; passes through Greenwich, England International date line—An imaginary line on the Earth's surface that is internationally agreed upon as the place where each new calendar day begins. Its 180 degrees eat or west from the Prime Meridian.

GREENWICH, ENGLAND Everything on Earth is measured in terms of its distance east or west from this line

Mental Mapping Mental maps represent what we know about the locations and the characteristics of places at a variety of scales (local to global) From the layout of our homes to the distribution of oceans and continents on the surface of the Earth. Knowledge and experience influence the content of our mental maps. Draw your mental map… from OCHS to your home. 13

Map Terminology Reference Map – depict terrain, cities, political boundaries, and rivers at appropriate levels of detail. Thematic Map – provide geographic overviews for specific themes like precipitation, birth rate, agricultural production, or dominant religion.

Reference Maps Physical Maps Topographic Political
show the natural features of the Earth. do not contain man made features. Topographic Many maps only deal with the two- dimensional location of an object without taking into account its elevation. Topographic maps on the other hand do deal with the third dimension by using contour lines to show elevation change on the surface of the earth, (or below the surface of the ocean). Political - Show how humans have impacted the landscape. For example, city names, roads, country borders, etc. are all part of political maps. Change frequently—wars are often the cause of political maps being redrawn.
16
Thematic Maps Can represent a variety of information including things like climate, precipitation, vegetation, population, life expectancy, etc. Generally used when you are looking at a single piece of information. We like them because they… Present information concisely Show what we can’t see Show spatial relationships
17
Specific types of maps
18
Cartogram Type of thematic map in which geometry or space of the map is distorted in order to convey information.
19
Choropleth Type of thematic map in which areas are shaded in proportion to a variable measurement (e.g. density) Choropleths can also be used for comparison.
20
Choropleth
21
Topographic A detailed representation of natural features on the ground, especially elevation (height).
22
Dot Maps Use dots to show information about a distribution.
A single dot may represent one occurrence of something (earthquake) or more than one (a dot may represent 100,000 people)
23
Graduated Circle Like dot maps, they use symbols.
The symbols have different sizes in proportion to some quality that occurs at that point. The populations of cities are often depicted in graduated circle maps.
24
Map Skills You’ll circulate through 5 map skills stations involving practice with various types of maps. You’ll have 9 minutes to complete the questions at each, and then 1 minute to rotate to the next station. Please write on your own paper. Always label which station you’re working on. B1 – needs to finish last map activity

3 Types of Maps Physical map—focus on geographical features such as mountains, rivers, streams, vegetation, oceans, lakes – anything naturally found in the environment Political map – shows boundaries of counties, states, countries, property lines, cities, roads – government established (human characteristics) Theme Map- shows some type of topic votes for president oil production natural resources economic map deer population

Climographs Display data about precipitation and temperature. 26
