Bell ringer Which has more heat: a cup of boiling hot water or a swimming pool at air temperature? How do you know?
3
answer The cup of water has the higher temperature. The swimming pool has more heat. Heat- (Thermal energy) total amount of kinetic energy of all the particles in a material. Temperature - is related to how fast the atoms and molecules within a substance are moving.
4
Review Can humans really feel temperature? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXT012u s9ng https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXT012u s9ng

Notes EQ- How are endothermic and exothermic reactions related to kinetic and potential forms of energy? Language Objective: Explain the difference between endothermic and exothermic reactions.
6
Thermal energy Thermal energy is the internal (inside) energy of an object due to the kinetic energy of its atoms and/or molecules. Remember: The atoms and/or molecules of a hotter object have greater kinetic energy than those of a colder one. Examples: A cup of hot tea has thermal energy A grill gives off thermal energy by burning propane
7
Important vocabulary Exothermic Reaction- Exo = meaning “outside,” “outer,” “external” Thermal- of, relating to, or caused by heat When the chemical process RELEASES heat, making the results feel HOT to the touch – Stored chemicalheat energy
8
Endothermic Reaction- Endo- meaning “within” Thermal- of, relating to, or caused by heat – When the chemical process USES heat and stores it in chemical bonds, making the results feel COLD to the touch – Heat energy stored chemical

Other Types of Kinetic Energy Review: This is energy in motion. Kinetic energy is the motion of : – ANY OBJECT (visible or not) – Waves – Electrons ( negatively charged particles in atoms) – Atoms (the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element ) – Molecules (The smallest unit of a substance that has all of the physical and chemical properties of the substance )
11
Radiant Energy Electromagnetic energy (a form of energy that is reflected or emitted from objects in the form of electrical and magnetic) waves that can travel through space that travels in transverse waves. Can travel in a vacuum This energy includes: – X-rays – Gamma rays – Radio waves – Visible light Eureka Radiation Waves http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwSB_GhCrF0&list=PLTazu3 yYUXNBhF7hQKxlKlHGdR5NAPsHI
12
Motion Movement of objects or substances from one place to another. – Wind – Ball dropping – Any moving object

Exit pass With a partner review your notes Turn on your computer 1.Define endothermic 2.Define exothermic 3.Define radiant energy 4.Define thermal energy
