Vocabulary - Brand: A type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name - Brand name: A name given by the maker to a product or range of products, especially a trademark - Trade name: A name by which something is known in a particular trade or profession, or has the status of a trademark. - Brand mark: A design element, such as a symbol, logo, a character, or even a sound, that provides visual or auditory recognition for the product.

More Vocab -Trade Character: Animals, people, or objects that are used to advertise a good or service that come to be associated with that good or service. -Trademark: Any name, symbol, figure, letter, word, or mark adopted and used by a manufacturer or merchant in order to designate his or her good and to distinguish them from those manufactured and sold by other. A trademark is proprietary term that is usually registered with the Patent and Trademark office to assure it’s exclusive use by it’s owner

Examples -Brand: Nike, Adidas, Converse, Sperry, etc. -Brand Name: Nike, Adidas, Converse, Sperry, etc. -Trade Name: Kodak, McDonalds, etc. -Brand Mark: Nike Swoosh, AT&T Globe, Target Bullseye -Trade Character: Mascots, Celebrity Spokespeople, fictional characters -Washington Redskins,William Shatner for Priceline, Geico Gekko -Trademark: “Built Ford Tough” Ford Slogan

Why are Trademarks Used? ●They are used to distinguish yourself from other generic brands. ●If it is easily rememberable people will go to yours verses one not easily remembered.

Consequences of Using an Established Brand without Permission ●You could be sued by someone with a similar name ●Make sure it’sn’t copyrighted
